Myrtle Beach, SC (July 6, 2010) - Cory Harrilchak went 4-4 with three extra base hits and three RBI, and Randall Delgado stymied the Red Sox lineup with six scoreless innings as the Pelicans salvaged the series finale by a 7-1 score at BB&T Coastal Field on Tuesday night. The defeat was Salem's first loss in Myrtle Beach since July 4, 2009, snapping a streak of 11 consecutive wins in the Palmetto State for the Sox. Salem scored its only run in the eighth inning to avoid the shutout.
Delgado beat the Sox for the first time in three tries this season, retiring 13 of the first 15 batters of the game to set the tone. Salem never had multiple runners aboard against Delgado until the sixth inning, when the righthander pitched around a two-on with nobody-out predicament to complete his six inning performance. The 20-year-old Panamanian improved to 3-6 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.82.
Salem starter Stolmy Pimentel fell to 5-7, giving up three runs on five hits in five and two thirds innings. Pimentel yielded a two-out RBI single to Samuel Sime in the second inning that gave the Pelicans a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Travis Jones belted a solo homer to left. Two innings later, Myrtle Beach took a 3-0 lead when Harrilchak tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jones.
Harrilchak singled in his first at-bat, doubled in his second chance, and connected on the leadoff triple in the sixth. Against Zach Hammes in the seventh, the center-fielder cracked a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double for his fourth hit of the day, picking up three RBI in the process. The Pelicans scored four times in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead.
Salem put two on with nobody out in the eighth, as Jon Hee and Mitch Dening each singled against reliever Brett Oberholtzer to begin the inning. Peter Hissey grounded into a double-play, but Oscar Tejeda connected on an infield single to score Hee from third, avoiding the shutout. Oberholtzer picked up his second save of the season, pitching three innings out of the pen with just one run allowed.
Despite the loss, Salem remained 12-2 on the season against Myrtle Beach, 6-1 in Virginia and 6-1 in South Carolina.
The Sox now venture to Kinston for the three game series against the Indians, beginning on Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium. Michael Lee is scheduled to start for Salem in the opener opposite T.J. House for Kinston. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
