BURLINGTON, VT --- Matt Swynenberg allowed just one hit over five scoreless innings, while David Freitas and Jason Martinson each had RBI singles as the Vermont Lake Monsters defeated the Lowell Spinners 3-1 in New York-Penn League action Sunday afternoon at historic Centennial Field.

A day after Vermont starter Chad Jenkins allowed just two hits over five scoreless innings, Swynenberg (1-0) allowed just one base runner in his five innings of work. After retiring the first seven batters, Swynenberg gave up a one-out single to Josue Peley in the third. The right-hander, who was 2-2 with a 5.17 ERA for the Lake Monsters in 2009, then retired the final eight batters he faced.

Vermont got its first run of the game in the second inning of Lowell starter Tyler Wilson (0-1), who allowed just one unearned run on four hits over his five innings. Wih Wade Moore on first base, Cole Leonida hit a dribbler to third for an infield single and Moore was able to score when third baseman Kolbrin Vitek's throw was wild at first for an error.

The Lake Monsters added another run in the sixth as Martinson led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Freitas RBI single to centerfield for a 2-0 Vermont lead.

Lowell (1-2) got its run in the eighth as Sean Killeen led off with a solo home run to leftfield for his second home run in as many days. The Spinners got a two-out single in the eighth, but Dustin Crane came on to retire the final batter of the eighth with the tying run on third.

Vermont (2-1) got an insurance run in the eighth as Hendry Jimenez led off with a double and moved to third on a throwing error by rightfielder Bryce Brentz. Martinson followed with a groundball single through the left side of the drawn-in infield for a 3-1 lead. Crane retired the Spinners in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.
