Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY - Alvaro Estevez struggled in his first start of the season and Jamestown could not solve Mahoning Valley's pitching as the Jammers dropped the rubber match of the opening series.
Estevez got off to a slow start in a bizarre first inning in which the Scrappers scored five runs on four hits, an error, two passed balls and a wild pitch. He hit Dan DeGeorge leading off the ballgame and allowed eight men to reach base before the first out was recorded.
Andrew Kinney singled with nobody out to make the score 5-0, and on the play, center fielder Brent Keys threw out Giovanny Urshela at the plate as he attempted to score the sixth run. Two batters later, Jordan Casas singled to center and Keys threw home to retire Kinney for the second out. DeGeorge grounded into a fielder's choice to end the first.
Mahoning Valley added a run in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Kevin Fontanez and three in the seventh on a three-run homer by Diego Seastrunk.
Alex Kaminsky started for the Scrappers and threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk. He struck out four batters to pick up his first victory of the season. James Reichenbach followed and continued to stymie the Jammers' bats, throwing three shutout innings as well. Jamestown was down to its final out in the ninth before Wilfredo Gimenez homered to left off reliever Takafumi Nakamura to make the score 9-2. The next batter, Todd Muecklisch, flew out to right field to end the game.
The Jammers now head out on their first road trip of the season, a five-game swing through Williamsport and State College. The team will play three games against the Crosscutters and two games against the Spikes before returning home on Saturday to play the Crosscutters again.
NOTES: Gimenez's home run was the team's first of the season...Marcell Ozuna's seventh-inning single extended his hitting streak to three games...Michael Brady pitched a scoreless ninth in his first pitching appearance for the Jammers since playing four games as an infielder for the team last season.
