Jackson Hits for Cycle in Cubs Win

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (30-32) win game one against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (33-28) in dramatic fashion as a walk-off two-run blast off the bat of Brett Jackson gave the Cubs the victory. Jackson made history on Monday night as he capped off the game for Daytona with his walk-off, but also completed the cycle with his no-doubt shot.

Jackson started the game off with a triple down the right field line and was able to get the toughest part of a cycle out of the way. He singled in the fourth inning and doubled in the seventh. With just one more piece of the puzzle to complete, the game entered extra innings. Jackson stepped up to the plate with David Macias at first base and jacked a fastball from Wilfredo Ramirez (0-1) over the right field wall. The cycle was the first since Felix Pie did it in 2004.

Cubs starter Dae-Eun Rhee did not have much control in the first inning as he walked two of the first three batters of the game. Flying Tigers first baseman Billy Nowlin made him pay for it with a three-run home run to left field. It was his fifth long ball of the season.

Rhee would settle down and only surrendered one hit in his next three innings of work. The South Korean righty had to settle for a no-decision as he only was able to work four innings due to the strict pitch count he is under.

Daytona took the lead with a big fourth inning. Third baseman Ryan Flaherty started off the frame with a single that ricocheted off Lakeland starter Luke Putkonen. The tall righty would stay in the game, but was not effective. He surrendered a double to first baseman Rebel Ridling to put runners at second and third for Kyler Burke. The right fielder singled to right field to bring in the Cubs first run of the game. Designated hitter Smailey Borges then grounded into a double-play that allowed Ridling to score. With the bases clear and two outs, catcher Mark Reed singled to center and moved to second on a David Macias walk. Left fielder Jose Valdez then tied the game with a single to left field that scored Reed. All-Star Brett Jackson gave Daytona the lead with a single to center field that chased Putkonen from the game. Reliever Rob Waite came into the game and got DJ LeMahieu to ground out to end the inning.

The scored remained the same until the top of the eighth inning when the Flying Tigers plated another run and tied the game at four. Aaron Shafer came into the ballgame with a runner in scoring position with two outs and gave up a controversial infield single up to Francisco Martinez. D.J. LeMahieu made a strong throw to first base and it looked like Martinez was out but the inning was extended for Lakeland. The Flying Tigers took advantage as Ben Guez singled to left field and brought home the tying run. Shafer battled as the Tigers left the bases loaded in the inning.

This game headed into extra innings as Marco Carrillo (2-0) came into relief for Daytona and threw three scoreless innings out of the pen. Carrillo gave up just two hits in his three innings of scoreless baseball as well as racked up four strikeouts.

The Daytona Cubs will continue action Tuesday night as they will take on the Lakeland Flying Tigers for gave two of the three game series. It will be another Silver Sluggers Tuesday with all Silver Sluggers members getting into the gates for free as well as Baseball Bingo for all to enjoy. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
