Lynchburg, VA (June 2, 2010)- Efrain Contreras scored an unearned run on a groundout by Alex Buchholz in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Lynchburg Hillcat bullpen didn't allow a hit in the final four frames as the Hillcats completed a three-game sweep of the Salem Red Sox with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night at City Stadium. The loss was the fourth consecutive by the Sox and evened the season series with Lynchburg at 5-5.

The unearned run scored by Contreras came off Salem starter Brock Huntzinger. After Contreras reached on a single to start the fifth, Jose Gualdron laid down an attempted sacrifice bunt and then beat the throw, which got away from first baseman Drew Hedman. The error by Huntzinger enabled Gualdron and Contreras to advance 90 feet to second and third, respectively. Buchholz then came through with a groundout to the shortstop to score Contreras for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

The Sox had tied the game in the top of the fifth as Peter Hissey doubled in Jon Hee, who had walked to lead off the inning, to bring Salem within one at 3-2. After Mitch Dening struck out, Tim Federowicz recorded his second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly to left to score Hissey and knot the score at 3-3.

Salem had a chance to jump on Lynchburg starter Jordan Hotchkiss in the top of the first. After Hissey struck out to start the game, Dening tripled to center and Federowicz singled up the middle to plate the game's first run. Ryan Lavarnway was then hit by a pitch and Will Middlebrooks singled to load the bags with one out. However, Alex Hassan lined out to second and Drew Hedman grounded out to first to end the threat, leaving the bases loaded.

The Hillcats responded with a rally of their own in the bottom half of the first. With one gone, Gualdron doubled to left and was brought home on a two-out double from Carlos Mendez. After a free pass to Neftali Soto, Kevin Coddington roped a single to left to bring in Mendez and put Lynchburg on top 2-1 after just one inning.

Lynchburg doubled its lead in the fourth inning as Coddington doubled with one out and came home on a two-out RBI single by Kevyn Feiner to make it 3-1 Hillcats.

After a fantastic May, Huntzinger (5-3) was roughed up a bit in his first outing of June. The right-hander went five innings, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. It was the first loss for Huntzinger since April 25.

Federowicz was the lone Salem batter with multiple hits, as the catcher went 2-for-3 with two RBI on the night. Hissey's double, Dening's triple and Middlebrooks' single were the only other hits that the Sox mustered on the night.

The Sox return to Lewis-Gale Field on Thursday to open up a seven-game homestand with the first of four against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Fabian Williamson will look to break the losing streak for the Sox against Myrtle's J.J. Hoover.
