OKC RedHawks Game Notes
May 27, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release
TONIGHT: The RedHawks and Tacoma Rainiers (Seattle Mariners) will finish a game suspended by rain yesterday and then play a 7-inning nightcap to conclude a rain-shortened 3-game series. Yesterday's doubleheader opener was 1-1 after 4 innings when rain stopped play. After a 3-hour, 41-minute delay, the game was suspended and the series reduced to 3 games. This is the only regular season series between these teams, so there was no chance to make up yesterday's nightcap. Tacoma won the series opener on Monday 7-3. OKC is 3-2 through the first 5 games of what is now an 11-game trip. The RedHawks lead the American South by 1 game over Albuquerque. Tacoma is a half-game back of Salt Lake in the Pacific North. Doug Mathis gets the start for OKC against Tacoma lefty Luke French, second in the PCL with a 1.61 ERA.
TALE OF THE TARP: Four of the last 16 scheduled RedHawks playing dates have had postponements or cancellations because of rain. The RedHawks had no rainouts or rain delays in their first 31 scheduled dates this season. Rain has fallen during play or affected pre-game work in 6 of the first 7 days on this trip. Seven different rain delays have occurred during the trip (5 in Portland, 2 in Tacoma) totaling 8 hours and 26 minutes. Four of the delays have pushed back the scheduled first pitch, with Tuesday's pre-game delay becoming a postponement before any baseball was played.
FRYING PAN-FIRE: The final leg of this 3-city trip begins tomorrow at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., near New Orleans. According to City-Data.com, Enumclaw Plateau, Wash., 55 miles from Tacoma's Cheney Stadium, is the nation's wettest city (along 50,000+ populations) averaging 84.9 inches of annual rain. Kenner, La., 3.3 miles from Zephyr Field, is tied for ninth in annual rainfall at 64.1 inches.
SAME BOAT (OR PLANE): The RedHawks and Zephyrs will share a long day's journey into a series opener tomorrow. OKC travels from Tacoma to New Orleans (2,616 miles between city centers) and the Zephyrs go home from Portland (2,648 miles). According to the league mileage chart, those are the farthest spans between cities in the PCL.
BULLPEN WORKING OVERTIME: In the past 9 games, OKC's bullpen has logged 35.1 innings, allowing 3 earned runs (0.76 ERA) on 19 hits while earning 2 wins without a loss. The bullpen strung together a 24.2-inning scoreless streak (snapped on Saturday) during that span.
ERA NO. 1: OKC leads the PCL in team ERA at 3.30. Iowa has the second best ERA at 3.45. The RedHawks have allowed the fewest home runs (22) and the third-fewest hits and runs.
STROP'S STREAKS: OKC reliever Pedro Strop had a stretch of 24 consecutive retired batters snapped in his last outing on Sunday when Lance Zawadski drew a 2-out walk in the ninth inning. The streak began with the final out of a save May 8 in Iowa and continued through all or part of 5 outings. Dating to May 8, the only 3 batters to reach against Strop did so on walks. The last hit he allowed came on May 4 at Omaha on a 2-out single by Marc Maddox. Strop has pitched 9 consecutive hitless and scoreless innings spanning his last 5 appearances.
WELCOME TO THE EIGHT-HOLE: The eighth spot in the batting order has been a flexible position this season. Manager Bobby Jones has used 14 of the team's 20 position players in the eight-hole. Emerson Frostad, currently with Double-A Frisco, has the most starts (8) in the penultimate place in the order. Hernan Iribarren has the best record among 8-hole hitters, as OKC has won all 5 times he's batted eighth.
MISCELLANY: The RedHawks dropped to 5-7 in series openers on Monday...they are 3-8 in series finales...they had a 3-game errorless streak snapped Monday...the RedHawks are 15-7 when errorless and 9-13 when charged with a bobble...Esteban German is tops in the league with 37 runs scored and is third with 17 stolen bases.
