Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (May 26, 2010) - Peter Hissey drove in Luis Segovia with a triple off the right field wall in the bottom of the eighth to give the Red Sox a one-run lead, and Salem held on to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash 3-1 at Lewis-Gale Field on Wednesday night. The win evens the three-game set at one-one and brings the Sox back within five games of the first place Dash, with a chance to clip that margin to four in the rubber match on Thursday.

Pitching reigned supreme for the second consecutive evening, as Salem's Alex Wilson and Winston-Salem's Nevin Griffith each battled through six fantastic innings. The Sox were able to break through against Griffith in the bottom of the fifth, as Mitch Dening laced a two-out double to score Tim Federowicz, who also doubled in the inning.

Griffith was spectacular outside of the fifth, going six frames while yielding one run on three hits to go along with six strikeouts. Wilson countered with six shutout of his own, allowing just two hits while striking out five, including all three batters in his final inning of work. With the six shutout innings, Wilson has not allowed an earned run in his last sixteen innings on the mound. The right-hander's second quality start of the year dropped his ERA to 3.38. But neither pitcher received a decision in the final outcome.

The Dash tied the game in the top of the seventh off Sox reliever Michael Lee. Eduardo Escobar walked to lead off the frame, and was brought home by an Ozzie Lewis two-out double into the right-center field gap. Escobar crossed the plate second before Lewis was thrown out after overrunning second base.

After David Mailman struck out to begin the eighth against Winston-Salem reliever Dan Remenowsky (1-1), Segovia singled to bring Hissey to the plate. The center fielder's third triple of the year broke the 1-1 tie, as Segovia eluded the tag of the Dash's Luis Sierra with a great head-first slide. Oscar Tejeda promptly drove in Hissey with a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give Salem a two-run cushion.

Lee (3-3) pitched the final three innings to earn the victory, as he allowed the lone run on two hits, while striking out four, two of which came in the ninth inning.

Hissey went 2-for-4 on the night for Salem, as he drove in his third RBI of the series. Winston finshed with only four hits, three of which came off the bat of Lewis, as he finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

In the five games between the Sox and Dash, the aggregate score is now even at 28 apiece, despite Winston owning three wins to Salem's two in the season series. The two squads will square off for the final time in this half of the season at 7:05 Thursday night. Stolmy Pimentel will take the bump for Salem against Winston-Salem's Stephen Sauer in the rubber game of the series.
