Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Starter Mark Serrano registered his fourth quality start in eight games, but it wasn't enough to lift the Hillcats over the Pelicans, whose starter pitched just as well. The Hillcats drop the middle game of the series, 2-1.

The Pelicans scored first in the bottom of the first inning off starter Mark Serrano. Dan Nelson knocked his third home run of the season, but first with Myrtle Beach. He spent the first two months of the season with Potomac.

Myrtle Beach scored again in the fifth inning. Luis Sumoza led off the inning with a double, then reached third on Matt Kennelly's sacrifice bunt. Calvin Culver drove in Sumoza with a single to make the lead 2-0 Pelicans.

The Hillcats cut the lead in half in the eighth inning after Myrtle Beach went to the bullpen. Jose Gualdron led off the frame with his second double of the game and moved to third on Neftali Soto's groundout. With Devin Mesoraco up, Gualdron scored on a passed ball that got away from catcher Matt Kennelly. Alex Buchholz hit a two-out double that barely missed leaving the ballpark in that inning, but Buchholz was stranded there to end the inning.

The Hillcats went 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to end the game.

Both starting pitchers had excellent outings. Julio Teheran made his second start with Myrtle Beach, and first at home. He threw six scoreless innings and gave up only four hits while striking out two. Teheran gets credited for the win, his first with the Pelicans. Serrano tied a season-long with seven innings pitched. He struck out seven and let up only two earned runs, but still gets the loss. Benino Pruneda picks up the save in one and one-third innings of work.

Lynchburg and Myrtle Beach conclude their series tomorrow night at 7:05. James Avery (0-1, 6.75) starts against Matt Crim (2-3, 3.86). The Hillcats return home Friday for the first of a six-game homestand against division rival Frederick and 460 rival Salem.
