Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Kinston, NC (May 19, 2010) - Salem managed just one hit over the first six innings and a late rally fell short in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to Kinston at Grainger Stadium. Ryan Lavarnway and Tim Federowicz each registered two hits, but Indians' second baseman Jason Kipnis crushed three hits and drove in three runs from the three-hole in the order, leading Kinston to their third straight win over the Red Sox. Kinston starter Joe Gardner maintained his 0.00 ERA through his third start, striking out eight over six dominant innings, in which Lavarnway had Salem's only hit. The Sox will look to avoid being swept for the first time this year in Thursday's finale.
For the fourth straight game, Salem fell behind in the first inning. Kinston connected on three consecutive singles to begin the game against Sox starter Caleb Clay, with Kipnis driving in Jordan Henry to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead. Kinston connected on five singles in the first two innings, yet double plays turned by Salem's defense in each of the first two frames minimized the damage to just one run.
In the third, however, Kinston capitalized with two more runs on three hits, both tallies scoring on Kipnis' two-out RBI double. The Tribe managed nothing else against Clay, who completed five innings and got tagged with his first loss of the season. Clay allowed three runs on eight hits and his record dropped to 2-1.
Salem finally broke through offensively when Kinston turned to its bullpen. David Roberts supplanted Gardner in the seventh and immediately encountered trouble. Lavarnway and Federowicz both singled to begin the inning and bring the tying runner to the plate. Although both Drew Hedman and Alex Hassan were retired, Ryan Dent delivered an RBI double to right-center field to score one and move the tying runs into scoring position. Mitch Dening proceeded to smack the first pitch he saw into left field, scoring Federowicz and creating a play at the plate with Dent. The incoming throw from Adam Davis was a bit off line, but catcher Richard Martinez managed to lunge and tag out Dent to end the inning and keep the Red Sox behind, 3-2.
Kinston used the momentum of the outfield assist to respond offensively in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring twice on three hits, a walk, and two wild pitches against Salem reliever Will Latimer. Leading 5-2 into the ninth, Salem plated one unearned run on an RBI double from Federowicz, but Hedman and Hassan both were retired by Travis Turek to finish off the Sox.
The Indians, we two weeks ago were 9-17, now have won 11 of their last 14 to pull their season mark back to .500 at 20-20. Salem falls to 25-15, with 30 games remaining in the half and an even 100 games left in the season.
Salem and Kinston wrap up their four-game series on Thursday evening. Alex Wilson gets the start for the Sox, with Carolina League ERA leader T.J. McFarland on the mound for the Indians. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
