GREENVILLE, SC - The Drive, aka "The Cardiac Kids", almost did it again on Saturday night. Trailing from the get go versus the Lakewood BlueClaws, the Drive found themselves down 5-2 heading into the final inning.
But after Dan Butler drew a leadoff walk, Christian Vazquez belted a two-run homer that just cleared the Green Monster and snuck inside the foul pole. However, Lakewood closer Joshua Zeid struckout the next two batters to clinch a 5-4 victory, and earning his sixth save.
Lakewood mounted a 4-0 lead while starting pitcher Jarred Cosart was dealing on the hill. The right-hander retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up a two-out single to Vladimir Frias. That would be the only hit Cosart allowed until the sixth inning, his final frame.
Once again it was Frias, who laced a triple that bounded into the right-field corner, with one out. The Drive plated their first run as Wilfred Pichardo followed with an RBI-single. But Cosart finished his outing with a strong line - 6.0 innings, three hits, one run and 10 strikeouts.
After Lakewood added an unearned run in the top of the seventh, the Drive closed the gap to three runs again, scoring in the home half of the inning. Reymond Fuentes singled off reliever Eric Massingham and newcomer Reynoldo Rodriguez ripped a two-out triple.
Yeiper Castillo (1-3) suffered the loss for the Drive, allowing four runs - three earned - on four hits and three walks over 5.0 innings. He struckout two.
The Drive now travel to Lexington, KY for a four-game series with the Legends, beginning Sunday at Applebee's Park. First pitch is set for 2:05 PM in the opener, as Kendal Volz (3-2, 3.34 ERA) toes the rubber. Due to a doubleheader Saturday night, Lexington's starter has yet to be determined.
After their four-game road trip, the Drive return home on Thursday, May 20th. The eight-game homestand will features series' against the Augusta GreenJackets and Charleston RiverDogs.
