Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
TAMPA, FL (May 11, 2010) - For the second consecutive night, strong pitching and timely hitting were the key for the Miracle as they beat the Tampa Yankees 6-2. Behind six strong innings from left-handed pitcher Michael Tarsi who allowed only two runs on five hits, the Miracle offense pounded out 11 hits - four for extra-bases. Seven of the nine hitters for Fort Myers had at least one hit in the game, including center-fielder Brandon Roberts who drove in a season-high three runs in a 3-for-5 night at the plate.
Tarsi (2-3) picked up his second win of the season, both coming on the road. He did not allow any hits through the first three innings, until Yankees' third-baseman Bradley Suttle hit a base-hit with out-out in the fourth. Tampa picked up their only runs of the night in the fifth inning against Tarsi, as the Yankees had four consecutive singles against the lefty.
Loek Van Mil, who joined the team this afternoon from Extended Spring Training, pitched two scoreless innings in relief, recording six strikeouts. Tony Davis pitched the ninth as he allowed one base hit and struck out one.
The Miracle jumped out to an early lead in the game on Tampa starter Adam Warren in the third inning. With two-outs and Brandon Roberts at second base, Deibinson Romero drove in the first run of the night on a line-drive single up the middle.
Fort Myers would then push across two more runs against Warren in the fourth. The Miracle loaded the bases for Brandon Roberts who delivered an RBI single to score two runs, putting the Miracle up 3-0. Warren was removed from the game before the fifth, marking the first time he has not gone at least five frames this season. Giving up three runs on six hits, he was charged with just his second loss of the year.
The Miracle would tack on their fourth of the night against Yankees' reliever Phil Bartleski in the fifth inning. After Chris Herrmann was hit by a pitch, Nate Hanson hit a high drive over Walter Ibarra's head in left-field for an RBI double. Hanson now has a team season-high nine-game hitting streak, as he moves past Chris Herrmann, Drew Thompson, and Evan Bigley who have all had eight-game hitting streaks this season.
Up 4-2 in the eighth, the Miracle would add their final two runs of the night against Time Norton. After a lead off base hit by Chris Cates, Brandon Roberts picked up his third hit of the night, a line-drive RBI base hit that rolled all the way to the wall in right-center field for a double. With two outs, Deibinson Romero hit a routine ground ball to Tampa short stop Jose Pirella, who threw the ball wild to first on a throwing error to allow Roberts to score from second. Pirella has five errors in the series, with three on Tuesday night.
After taking the first two games of the series, the Miracle (14-17) look to take the series from Tampa (16-16) on Wednesday night. Liam Hendriks, who was called up from Low-A Beloit earlier in the week, will make his first start of the season for Fort Myers. The Yankees will counter with RHP Andrew Brackman (0-3, 11.49). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. from George M. Steinbrenner Field.
