Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have assigned right-handed pitcher Loek Van Mil and left-handed pitcher Andrei Lobanov to High-A Fort Myers from Extended Spring Training. To make room on the 25-man Miracle roster, pitcher Kyle Gibson has been promoted to Double-A New Britain.
Gibson, last year's first-round draft pick, departs Fort Myers after picking up a victory last night at Tampa (6 2/3 ip, 5 h, 1 r, 8 so). The 22-year old posted a 4-1 record with a 1.87 ERA in seven starts, while striking out 40 batters in 43 2/3 innings.
Van Mil, the tallest player in professional baseball at 7-foot-1, collected five saves in 25 games last year for the Miracle (0-0 2.86 ERA). The 25-year old is on the Twins 40-man roster.
Van Mil is reunited with the shortest player in professional baseball, current Miracle infielder Chris Cates, who is 5-foot-3.
Lobanov, a 20-year old native of Moscow, Russia, makes his second appearance in a Miracle uniform after throwing two innings during the 2008 season. He finished third in the GCL in saves last year with seven and was named a GCL Postseason All-Star.
The Miracle roster now features players from six different countries.
The Miracle also announced that they have placed pitchers Bobby Lanigan and Brad Tippett on the 7-day disabled list.
