San Jose Giants News Release
High Desert's Nate Tenbrink homered twice while Juan Diaz and Rich Poythress also each went deep to lead the Mavericks to a convincing 15-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. High Desert connected for 10 extra-base hits in the contest as they handed the Giants their largest margin of defeat this season. With the loss, San Jose falls to 14-13.
Aaron King (1-2) allowed a career-high tying seven runs (all earned) on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. Oliver Odle (1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) and David Quinowski (3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) also struggled while pitching out of the Giants bullpen.
Juan Perez and Johnny Monell each smacked solo home runs for the Giants while Ehire Adrianza (2-for-4, 2B) was the lone San Jose player to finish with a multi-hit game.
The Mavericks quickly jumped in front with four runs in the top of the second inning against King. Poythress led off with a double to the fence in center field before Scott Savastano was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Denny Almonte delivered an RBI single and then Trevor Coleman ripped a double to deep left center field to bring home two more runs. After Diaz struck out, Kyle Saeger came through with a run-scoring double to make it 4-0.
Tenbrink extended the lead to 5-0 with a leadoff home run in the top of the third inning before High Desert scored three more times in the fourth. With one out, Diaz drove a fly ball over the fence down the left field line for a solo homer while Edilio Colina then doubled with two outs to knock King out of the game. Odle then entered the contest and promptly surrendered a two-run homer to Tenbrink - his second long ball in as many innings - for an 8-0 advantage.
San Jose scored their first run of the night in the bottom of the fourth as Culberson singled with one out, advanced to third on Francisco Peguero's double and then came home on Perez's groundout to third.
Ryan Feierabend, who has 25 games of Major League experience from 2006-08 with the Seattle Mariners, made the start on the mound for the Mavericks and yielded just one run and two hits over four innings. The left-hander, who is recovering from an elbow injury that prevented him from pitching in 2009, retired the first 10 batters that he faced.
High Desert kept the pressure on in the top of the sixth sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs on seven hits - including six runs before an out was recorded. Seager brought home the first run of the inning with an RBI double off of Odle before consecutive RBI singles from Colina and Tenbrink. Poythress then stepped to the plate and belted a three-run homer to right field off of Quinowski to extend the lead to 14-1. Then with two outs, Coleman came through with an RBI double to score the Mavericks' 15th and final run of the night.
Perez and Monell both connected for solo homers in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Nick Czyz to bring San Jose to within 15-3, however the last eight Giants hitters that came to the plate in the contest were retired. Czyz (2-0) earned the win after surrendering two runs (both earned) on five hits over five innings of work.
