Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) The Trenton Thunder, Double A affiliate of the New York Yankees, have joined forces with The Joshua Harr Shane Foundation of Edison and East Windsor, NJ for an initiative that will help soldiers keep in touch with their families.
The program, "Keep Our Troops Connected", aims to raise funds to purchase "phone cards" to be given to soldiers so they can call home for free around the Easter and Passover holidays this year.
The Joshua Harr Shane Foundation asks that all donations for the " Keep Our Troops Connected " program be made online at www.joshuaharrshane.org or by mail at: Phone Home For The Holidays, The Joshua Harr Shane Foundation, 1676 Route 27, Edison, NJ 08817. The foundation is an entirely volunteer organization and 100% of the proceeds will go towards purchasing phone cards to be distributed through McGuire Air Force Base.
The Joshua Harr Shane Foundation previously operated a similar program in 2006 and raised nearly $15,000 for 6,500 calling cards that were donated to US soldiers overseas via Fort Dix army base in New Jersey.
The mission of the Joshua Harr Shane Foundation is to "do all we can to help those in need." They have supported a variety of causes since its formation in 2000. The foundation was formed to preserve the legacy of Joshua Harr Shane, who passed away at the age of 18 while he was a freshmen at Rutgers University. One of the foundations most prominent events is their Annual Joshua Harr Shane Golf Classic which has raised over $150,000 for the Palliative Care Program through The Embrace Children's Fund over its nine year history. The 2010 event will take place on Tuesday, August 10th.
The initiative to lend aid to the troops in this manner arose when Judy Harr Shane, founder of the organization, overheard a radio broadcast in which a mother of a US Soldier described her immense gratitude for her son being gifted a phone card prior to his deployment. With this gift the soldier was able to call home, when he otherwise would not have had the means, and speak to his family before embarking on a mission that would inevitably take his life.
The Thunder will support "Keep Our Troops Connected" by making a financial contribution and by using its access to the greater Trenton community to promote the program. The Thunder ask for media outlets to publish this press release. The team is also promoting the program on its website and social media pages and will feature it in its weekly newsletter.
In addition, the foundation will hold a Trenton Thunder FUNdraiser on Monday, July 26th. To support the cause, fans are encouraged to purchase tickets by visiting www.joshuaharrshane.org.
All Trenton Thunder tickets, including Mini Plans, Season Tickets, Group Outings and Luxury Suites are on sale now at trentonthunder.com or by calling 609-394-3300.
Trenton begins its 2010 season by hosting the Erie Sea Wolves (double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) on Thursday, April 8. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
