INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Allen Americans 4-1 in a battle of the Central Hockey League's (CHL) expansion teams Thursday night at Independence Events Center. Jarret Lukin had a pair of goals for the Americans and Chris Whitley stopped 26 of 27 shots for his 18th win of the season. Mavericks' captain Carlyle Lewis had the team's only goal and Jeff Christian extended his scoring streak to 13 games with an assist. Missouri (17-17-3) heads to Mississippi for games on Friday and Saturday against their Northern Conference rival.
Lukin gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 15:37 mark of the first period when he took a centering pass from Colton Yellow Horn and snapped it over the shoulder of Mavericks' goaltender Alexandre Vincent. The goal proved to be the only one of the period and Missouri was held scoreless in a period for the first time in their past nine periods.
Only 54 seconds into the second period, the Americans made it a 2-0 game when Jordie Benn scored his fifth goal of the season on a pass from Nino Musitelli. Missouri answered at the 7:03 mark to make the score 2-1 on a goal by Lewis. Christian made a nice backhand pass from behind the net to Lewis in the slot and he slapped the puck past Whitley's glove side. Exactly two minutes later, Allen made it a two-goal game again on another connection from Yellow Horn to Lukin, this time on a two-on-one. Lukin again snapped a shot over the shoulder of Vincent to make it 3-1.
In the final seconds of the middle period, Allen took a 4-1 lead when Liam Huculak took a slapshot from the top of the right circle and scored with 12.3 seconds left on the clock. He was assisted by Chris Kaufman and Kurtis Dulle and the Americans took the 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
Missouri had a three power play chances in the third period, but was unable to convert and ended their chances to get back into the game.
The Americans outshot the Mavericks 35-27 in the game. Neither team was able to score on the power play with Missouri going 0-5 and Allen finishing 0-3. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, January 30 at Independence Events Center.
