BOISE, Idaho - It was a head to head battle but the Idaho Stampede defeated the Utah Flash 97-96 in Boise, Saturday night.
The Stampede and Flash both scored 27 points in the first quarter. Sundiata Gaines of the Stampede contributed eight points and Lanny Smith came off the bench to score seven in the first quarter.
In the second quarter Dontell Jefferson scored seven points to help lift the Flash to a six point lead at the end of the half. Orien Greene also contributed by finishing the half with five assists. Both Cedric Simmons and Emmanuel Jones of the Stampede had seven rebounds at the end of the quarter.
The third quarter was another close battle as the Stampede scored 22 points to the Flash's 25 giving the flash a nine point lead heading into the fourth. The Flash's Bennet Davis scored six points in the third and contributed defensively with two steals. Sundiata Gaines and Mildon Ambres each had seven points in the third for the Stampede, helping to cut down the Flash's lead.
Utah ended with six players scoring in double digits including Wheeler and Ingram with 16 points, Jefferson and Davis with 14 points, and Nevill with 11 points. Orien Greene had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Mildon Ambres ended the night with his third double-double of the season scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. Idaho had three other players score in double digits including Gains and Smith with 21 points a piece, and Jones with 12 points.
"Going into the 4th quarter down nine points, I told the guys if we can stop them and get one point at a time we could come back," said Stampede Head Coach Bob MacKinnon. "Our team showed tremendous resistance and came back to make a win."
Although the Flash led the game for most of the fourth, it wasn't enough to hold back the Stampede. Lanny Smith made two free throws to give Idaho a one point lead over Utah. With 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter Mildon Ambres stole the ball away from Bennet Davis and solidified the win for Idaho.
The Flash and Stampede will meet up again this Monday night at 7:00 PM MST at Qwest Arena in Boise.
