Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Remington's Seafood and Steakhouse, are pleased to announce that close to $400 has been raised during the first half of the 2009-2010 regular season for the Brandon Sun Fund for Kids.

Saves for the Sun Fund for Kids is a fundraising initiative introduced by the Wheat Kings last season, in conjunction with Remington's Seafood and Steakhouse, located in the Town Centre.

For each save made on home ice this season by Brandon goalkeepers Andrew Hayes and Jacob DeSerres, Remingtons will donate $1 to the Sun Fund for Kids. The Fund is a partnership between the Brandon Sun and Child and Family Services of western Manitoba and has been in operation since the mid eighties. It was established to raise funds to send disadvantaged children to camp.

The Child and Family Services Division is committed to the department's goals of keeping children safe and protected, encouraging individual, family and community responsibility in times of need as well as ensuring that services are delivered in the most effective and cost efficient manner possible.

Meanwhile the club has announced that over $4,000 has been generated for the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation and its popular Goals for Kids Campaign.

Local businesses donate up to $25 each time the Wheat Kings score a goal at home or on the road. Through the first 38 regular season games, Brandon has scored a league leading total of 163 goals (4.29 goals per game). Entering the second half of the regular season, which begins Monday night in Swift Current against the Broncos, the Goals for Kids campaign has received $4,075 in donations this season.

20-year old Matt Calvert leads the team with 25 goals, which translates to $625. Jay Fehr is next with nineteen goals. In fact, seven Wheat Kings have already reached double figures when it comes to goals this season. Joining Calvert and Fehr are Aaron Lewadniuk (18), newly acquired Shayne Wiebe (15) as well as Scott Glennie, Brayden Schenn and Toni Rajala with fourteen goals each.

The Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation is a non-profit, local registered organization dedicated to granting dreams to kids in western Manitoba. Westman Dreams for Kids has one simple goal: to give children who are facing a serious illness, and their families, something to smile about.

Participating businesses include Jason Krieser of the Keystone Centre, Total Eye Care, C & C Construction, Source for Sports, Paterson, Patterson, Wyman and Abel, J & G Supply, Dr. Brian Kiliwnik, Greg Anderson of RBC Financial, Busy Bee, EMCO Waterworks, Roy, Johnston and Co., Summit Promotions, Al Rosendaal of Investors Group, Crocus Credit Union, Kuipers Family Bakery, Wheat City Roofing, Northside Mazda, Scott Ball of Precision Toyota, Forbidden Flavours, Mobile One Marine, KK Penner Tire Centre, Advance Auto Body and Morningstar Metals.

The "Goals for Kids" campaign was established during the 1992-93 campaign and has raised over $225,000 since then. The program is one of the Westman Dreams for Kids major fundraising efforts during the year.

On the ice, Brandon entered this week's Christmas break with a record of 25-11-0-2, good for 52 points and a share of first place in the WHL's Eastern Division. Following Monday's game in Swift Current, the Wheat Kings will play in Red Deer and Edmonton before returning home for a 3-game homestand, scheduled to begin on Saturday, January 2nd against Prince Albert.
