
Spirit Fall to Spitfires 6-1

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit fell to the Windsor Spitfires 6-1 Saturday night at The Dow Event Center. Winger Josh Shalla contributed the lone Spirit goal while winger Jordan Szwarz and Michael Sgarbossa added an assist in the effort. The loss puts Saginaw's record at 17-14-3-0 for 37 points on the season, and wraps up the first half of the team's 68-game regular season schedule. The Spirit resume action on December 29, 2009 following a short holiday break.
The first period saw only one goal, coming from Windsor in the opening minutes. The goal came off the stick of winger Adam Wallace at 2:06, courtesy assists from winger Dylan Seguin and center Michael Whaley. The first period ended with Windsor ahead 1-0.
The Spitfires carried their momentum into the second period to propel them to a 6-0 lead over the home team Spirit. Winger Dale Mitchell (NHL TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS) scored an unassisted goal at 0:35 to start the second frame, then followed with his second marker of the night at 8:00. Defensemen Patrick Murphy and Paul Bezzo assisted on Mitchell's second goal. The Spitfires scored again at 11:37 when winger Austin Watson found the back of the net, off of assists from wingers Austen Brassard and Justin Shugg. The back-to-back scoring continued with Watson adding his second of the night, this time a powerplay goal at 15:58 that was assisted by wingers Justin Shugg and Mitchell. Windsor notched the final tally of the period at 16:25, when winger Derek Lanoue scored following assists from Wallace and Whaley. The second period ended with Windsor up 6-0.
The Spirit got on the board with the only goal of the third period, courtesy winger Josh Shalla. Shalla notched a powerplay goaly at 3:52 that was assisted by winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL PHEONIX COYOTES) and center Michael Sgarbossa. The game ended with Windsor winning, 6-1.
Spirit goaltender Edward Pasquale (NHL ATLANTA THRASHERS) posted 21 saves on 27 shots before being relieved at the start of the third period by Anthony Peters. Peters stopped all 6 shots he faced in the third. Spitfires netminder Troy Passinham had 28 saves on 29 attempts.
