Admirals Take Atlantic Assault To New England This Week

NORFOLK, Va. - One week after the Norfolk area was battered by a Nor'Easter dubbed the Atlantic Assault by certain media outlets, the Norfolk Admirals will bring their own version of an Atlantic assault to New England as they play five games in six nights against Atlantic Division opponents.

Last week, the Admirals split a pair of home games against the Binghamton Senators before dropping the puck on a season-long eight-game road trip. On Tuesday, the Admirals fell to the Senators 5-3 at Scope despite a pair of goals from Paul Szczechura. In the Wednesday rematch, the score was flipped as Brandon Bochenski netted a pair of goals and a pair of assists to lead Norfolk past Binghamton 5-3. The Admirals traveled to Hershey to open their road trip on Friday and fell to the Bears 5-3 despite a spirited third period comeback. Norfolk closed out the week on Saturday in Albany as they fell to the River Rats in overtime 2-1.

The Admirals play games three through seven of the season-long road trip this week, beginning tonight against the Portland Pirates at 7:00. They travel to Manchester tomorrow to battle the Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. After one day off, the trip resumes on Friday night with a 7:00 tilt against the Lowell Devils. The Admirals then return to Portland Saturday night for another 7:00 matchup with the Pirates before traveling south to Worcester for a 3:05 p.m. game against the Sharks on Sunday afternoon.

EAST DIVISION STANDINGS

At 8-8-1-0 (17 points), the Admirals are tied for fourth place in the American Hockey League's East Division. The East is led by the Hershey Bears (12-5-0-0, 24 pts). The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (8-5-1-1) and Albany River Rats (8-8-0-2) are tied for second place with 18 points. The Admirals are tied with the Binghamton Senators (7-7-2-1) with 17 points apiece. The Adirondack Phantoms (7-6-1-0, 15 pts) and Syracuse Crunch (5-7-2-2, 14 pts) round out the division.

ADMIRALS' LOG

- Sixteen of Norfolk's 17 games this season have been decided by two goals or less.

- Norfolk became the final AHL team to play their first overtime game of 2009-10 with Saturday's 2-1 overtime loss to Albany.

- With his 69th and 70th career goals as an Admiral on Wednesday vs. Binghamton, Brandon Bochenski moved past Ajay Baines (68 career goals) for second place on the all-time AHL Admirals goal scoring list. Bochenski is now six goals from tying Casey Hankinson (76 goals) for first place all-time.

- With four points on Wednesday evening, Bochenski also moved past Matt Henderson for fifth place on the AHL Admirals all-time points list. Bochenski has 135 points on 70 goals and 65 assists in 119 career games with Norfolk.

- Forward Paul Szczechura had points in five straight games (5G, 2A) before being recalled by the Lightning last Wednesday.

- Mike Lundin (2G, 7A) has points in nine of his last 12 games.

- Blair Jones (3G, 6A) has points in four of his last five games.

- Forward Ryan Craig was returned to the Admirals by Tampa Bay yesterday. Craig was tied for the Norfolk team lead in goals and points when he was recalled by the Lightning on November 5.

- Defenseman Matt Smaby was also sent to the Admirals yesterday by Tampa Bay for a conditioning stint.

- Last Tuesday vs. Binghamton, Norfolk allowed multiple power play goals for the first time since the season opener on October 3 in Hershey.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Admirals and Portland Pirates will close out a four-game season series this week with two games in Maine. Both teams have one victory over the other after splitting a pair of games at Scope in late October. Portland's scoring leader is Mark Mancari with 16 points. The goaltending tandem of Jhonas Enroth and rookie Jean-Philippe Lamoreaux has faced tough times this season, combining for a 6-11-0 record with a 3.69 GAA and .876 save percentage. The Pirates host the Admirals tonight, visit Worcester tomorrow, host Worcester on Friday and then host Norfolk again on Saturday.

The Admirals will face the Manchester Monarchs on Wednesday in a rematch of Norfolk's home opener weekend. Goaltending was the key in the October 9 and 10 matchup as Jonathan Bernier stopped 41 of 42 shots in a 2-1 Manchester victory on October 9 while Dustin Tokarski stopped all 26 shots he faced for a shutout in his first pro victory - a 2-0 Norfolk win on October 10. Bernier and rookie partner Jeff Zatkoff have remained hot, combining for a 11-5-1 record, 1.63 goals-against average and .953 save percentage on the season. The Monarchs are led by rookie Andrei Lotkionov's 14 points. The Monarchs are off before hosting the Admirals tomorrow.

On Saturday, the Admirals will face the Lowell Devils for the first time and could see a familiar face peering at them through a mask as former Admirals goaltender Mike McKenna now tends the goal for the Devils. McKenna has gone 6-3-0 with two shutouts, a 2.41 goals-against average and .921 save percentage so far with Lowell. Another familiar face the Admirals may see is a longtime pest of the Admirals from his time with the Portland Pirates and Hershey Bears - Louis Robitaille, who leads the AHL in penalty minutes once again. Vladimir Zharkov leads the Devils with 17 points while leading goal scorer Tim Sestito (7G) is on recall to the New Jersey Devils. Lowell will play at Springfield on Wednesday before hosting the Admirals on Friday in the first game of a four-game season series.

The Atlantic assault ends on Sunday afternoon in Worcester as the Admirals visit the DCU Center for the only time of the 2009-10 season. Defenseman Danny Groulx leads the Sharks with 14 points while center Steven Zalewski leads Worcester in goals with seven. The Sharks have a pair of rookies between the pipes, with Alex Stalock leading the team with a 6-5-1 record, 2.48 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. Worcester will host Portland on Wednesday before visiting the Pirates on Friday, traveling to Providence on Saturday and hosting the Admirals on Sunday.
