Moose Sweep Marlies In Shootout, 2-1

Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose swept the Toronto Marlies in a 2-1 shootout decision on Saturday night in front of 9,171 fans at MTS Centre. Eric Walsky notched the game-winner in the shootout for first-star honours while goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 20 of 21 shots for his eighth win this campaign.

The Marlies drew the first penalty of the night when Brennan Evans was penalized for hooking a short 47 seconds into the match. Despite positioning themselves in Toronto's zone for the duration of the man-advantage, the Moose failed to score or even fire a single attempt on starting goaltender James Reimer.

Near the five-minute mark of the opening period, Tommy Maxwell and Richard Greenop squared off near the penalty boxes to finish some unfinished business from yesterday's contest. A lengthy battle, that saw even blows by each attacker, resulted in five-minute fighting majors for both parties.

Manitoba's penalty kill unit made their debut at 6:24 when rookie defenceman Evan Oberg was fined for slashing. The Baby Leafs fired two shots on net during the two-minutes, but neither attempt could get past net minder Cory Schneider.

With Dusty Collins and Jay Rosehill both serving time, four-on-four hockey paid off for the visitors. A pass from behind the net, courtesy of Brennan Evans, allowed Tyler Bozak to wack the puck over a blinded Schneider to put his team on top.

The Moose benefited from back-to-back powerplays in the first half of the second stanza, but the club couldn't capitalize with an extra attacker. The Moose, however, did own the shot clock 11-9.

Tempers flared once again as Nathan McIver and Jay Rosehill exchanged pleasantries and then punches at 11:39. Manitoba's #8 dominated the scuffle and after being separated by the linesmen both men headed to the sin bin.

The Moose broke their goose-egg at 14:24. An initial wrist shot by Eric Walsky was completed when Sergei Shirokov poked in the rebound to knot the game at one.

Although the Moose were leading in shots 31-20 near the end of the third period, they couldn't break the tie and the two clubs were forced into overtime.
