Chicago Wolves News Release
AUSTIN---The Chicago Wolves battled back from a 2-1 deficit in the third period and left wing Brett Sterling netted the overtime winner to push the Wolves past the Texas Stars, 4-3, at the Cedar Park Center Saturday night.
Trailing, 3-2, with 51 seconds left in regulation, the Wolves evened up the score to send the game into overtime. With goaltender Drew MacIntyre pulled for an extra skater, Sterling sent the puck across the ice to center Jason Krog. Krog took a shot from the faceoff dot and right wing Tim Stapleton redirected it into the net to make the score 3-3.
Just 27 seconds into the overtime stanza, Sterling picked up the puck from the corner and took it straight to the net before roofing a shot under the crossbar, near-side, for the game-winning goal. Sterling (G, 2A) and Krog (G, 2A) led the way for Chicago (7-7-0-1) with three points each, while right wing Spencer Machacek (G, A) and defenseman Chris Chelios (2A) each notched two points.
Krog put the Wolves on the board first at 7:08 of the first period on a breakout play from their own zone. Krog received the puck from Sterling and crossed it over to Machacek. Machacek took a shot on Texas netminder Matt Climie, but he let the rebound bounce out to Krog, who pushed a one-timer past Climie to take the 1-0 lead.
Stars center Warren Peters tied up the game for Texas (11-2-2-2) at 2:44 of the second period. Wolves goaltender Drew MacIntyre lost the puck behind the net and couldn't make it back in time before Peters managed to wrap the puck around the goal and into the net.
Just 48 seconds later, the Stars took their first lead of the night, 2-1. MacIntyre made an original save on right wing Colton Sceviour's shot from the point but the rebound ricocheted out in front of the net. Center Aaron Gagnon picked it up and dished it back to left wing Francis Wathier who shot the puck into an open net for the goal.
MacIntyre (5-5-0) recorded 29 saves in the winning effort.
The Wolves tied the game at two off of a faceoff in their offensive zone, 4:46 into the third period. Krog won the faceoff and passed the puck back to Chelios. Chelios then ripped a shot through traffic from the point and Machacek deflected the puck to sneak it past Climie.
Climie (4-3-2) posted 29 saves in the loss.
The Stars regained the lead, 3-2, on a power-play opportunity at 7:38 of the third period. Defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy skated the puck up the boards and passed it across to Gagnon. Gagnon continued crossing the puck to center Greg Rallo, who then wristed the puck past MacIntyre for the 3-2 lead.
The Wolves conclude their road trip through Texas tomorrow against the Houston Aeros at the Toyota Center on Sun., Nov. 15 at 4 p.m.
