Wolves nipped by Bulldogs

Chicago Wolves News Release

ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves rallied to pull within one late in the third period, but it wasn't enough to get by the Hamilton Bulldogs, who took a 5-4 decision at the Allstate Arena Saturday night.

Rookie forward Andrew Kozek led the way for Chicago with two goals - his first of the season - and three points, while Brian Sipotz (2A), Kevin Doell (2A) and Spencer Machacek also posted multiple-point outings.

Center Matt Anderson kept the Wolves in the fight and narrowed the score to 5-4 with 4:55 left in the game when he surprised Hamilton goaltender Cedrick Desjardins with a quick shot from low in the slot, but the clock ran out on the comeback before the Wolves could find another tally.

"It was a battle to the end and we certainly generated a lot of chances. I really felt the game could have gone either way," said Wolves Head Coach Don Granato. "The frustrating thing is we gave up goals were weren't overwhelmed on. We made mistakes and paid the price with the result."

Chicago (1-5-0-0) got on the board early with a power-play tally from Kozek, 4:10 into the contest. Kozek parked himself at the front of the crease and pounced on a rebound, eventually stuffing it under Desjardins' pads.

Hamilton (3-0-0-1) retaliated when they sprung out on a two-on-one breakaway, opening up the ice for Brock Trotter to deke Wolves goaltender Drew MacIntyre and slide the puck past him into the net, evening the score, 1-1, at 10:47 of the first frame.

The Bulldogs inched ahead, 2-1, when defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron dumped the puck in from the blue line and Mike Glumac picked it up off the boards behind the net and slipped a quick pass out front to Sergei Kostitsyn, who sent a point-blank shot by MacIntyre with 3:51 left in the first period.

Kostitsyn netted his second of the game to make the score 3-1, 2:22 into the second period. Ryan Russell chipped the puck out from behind the net to Kostitsyn at the goal mouth, and he converted on a quick rip past MacIntyre.

MacIntyre (0-4-0) posted 22 saves for the Wolves.

Center Ben Maxwell put the Wolves in a three-goal hole, 4-1, at 3:50 of the middle frame. Kostitsyn flew down the left side on a breakaway and went in on MacIntyre, who made a diving save on his attempt, but the Wolves failed to clear the rebound, leaving it for Maxwell to tap past the fallen netminder.

Kozek answered for Chicago 2:20 later when he succeeded in pushing a pass from Doell through traffic in front of the net and by Desjardins, pulling the Wolves back within two, 4-2.

Desjardins (1-0-0) turned aside 30 Wolves shots in picking up the win for Hamilton.

Joey Crabb ripped a blast by Desjardins on a shorthanded breakaway to help Chicago pull back within striking distance, 4-3, at 15:53 of the second frame, but the Bulldogs returned the favor with a breakaway of their own, resulting in a goal by Russell, just 36 seconds later.

The Wolves return to action on Fri., Oct. 23 when the Manitoba Moose visit the Allstate Arena at 7:30 p.m.
