September 11, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany River Rats News Release
RALEIGH, NC-Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today released the team's groups for its 2009 training camp. Most of Carolina's veteran players will be skating with Group A, which hits the ice on Sunday at 10 a.m. The group listings and a full training camp roster are attached to this release. A complete training camp schedule is listed below.
Nine players who represented the Hurricanes during this week's NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, MI, will join the main camp: forwards Brandon Sutter, Zach Boychuk, Drayson Bowman, Chris Terry, Matt Kennedy and Nick Dodge; defensemen Jamie McBain and Brett Bellemore; and goaltender Mike Murphy. The Hurricanes won the eight-team tournament, defeating the Minnesota Wild in the championship game 4-1 on Thursday night.
Defenseman Joni Pitkanen today underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee. The procedure was performed by Dr. Marty Isbell at Rex Outpatient in Cary, NC, and Pitkanen is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. Defenseman Casey Borer will be in Raleigh for surgery on his neck, but will not participate in training camp.
One player has been added to the 2009 training camp roster, as defenseman Jonathan Paiement, who was previously signed to an affiliate contract for this season, will skate in Group B.
All training camp practices are open to the general public, except for Sept. 19 and Sept. 26, which are closed because of N.C. State football.
The Hurricanes play their first exhibition game of the 2009-10 season when they host the Nashville Predators on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 20, the team will host its annual Caniac Carnival at the RBC Center, the season kick-off event which includes rides, interactive games, live music and an autograph session with select Hurricanes players. The Caniac Carnival is free to all fans.
Training camp concludes with a team practice on Thursday, Oct. 1 at the RBC Center, and Carolina opens its 2009-10 season on Oct. 2, when the Hurricanes host the Philadelphia Flyers at the RBC Center at 7 p.m.
The River Rats are hosting their first annual "Rats Fest" prior to their September
26th pre-season home game against the Adirondack Phantoms. Entry to both the 2:00
p.m. festival and the 5:00 p.m. contest is free to the general public. Albany is set
to open its 17th season in the American Hockey League against the Manchester
Monarchs at the Times Union Center on October 3, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. River Rats
