Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem, VA (August 18, 2009) - Tim Federowicz went 3-4, three hurlers combined to allow just one earned run, and the Red Sox garnered a much-needed 5-3 win over Lynchburg to open a three-game set at Lewis-Gale Field. After collecting just eight hits combined in the two previous games, the Red Sox totaled 13 base knocks, including four for extra bases. With the win, the Sox improved to 23-26 in the half and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Though Salem fell behind 2-0 as starter Kyle Weiland struggled in the first inning, the offense would awaken in the middle innings and Lynchburg would not muster an earned run over the final eight frames. Weiland recovered from a frustrating first to complete five and a third innings, allowing six hits (only three after the first inning) and three runs (one earned). Weiland struck out six and picked up the victory, bringing his season record to 5-9.

Trailing 2-0 into the last of the fourth, the Salem offense broke through for consecutive multi-run innings. After Anthony Rizzo and Tim Federowicz reached on base hits to set the table, a David Mailman RBI ground out put the Sox on the board and a Jon Hee RBI single evened the score at two. In the fifth, Aaron Reza singled to open the inning and scored a batter later when Mike Jones' double to the gap rolled all the way to the wall. Leading 3-2, the Sox scored what ultimately would be the deciding run on Brad Correll's first base knock as a member of the Red Sox. After starting 0-10 through two and a half games, Correll, recently signed away from the Joliet Jackhammers in the Independent Northern League, singled to score Jones and make it 4-2.

The contest tightened in the top of the sixth when an unearned run inched the Hillcats to within a run, but Tim Federowicz blasted a leadoff solo shot in the eighth inning, his third Carolina League homer, to provide an insurance policy for the Red Sox. In the ninth, Loop insured that the insurance was nothing more than a bonus, retiring the side in order and striking out pinch-hitter Jared Keel to end the ballgame. Loop earned his 15th save of the year, second most in the league, while tying Lynchburg closer RJ Rodriguez for the league lead in appearances (43).

Federowicz's three hits left him a triple shy of the cycle, and while the top spot in the order went 0-5, everyone else in the Red Sox lineup recorded at least one hit. Mike Jones went 2-4 with two doubles, while Aaron Reza and Jon Hee each contributed a pair of singles. Five different players finished with one RBI.

The lone cause for concern on the otherwise positive night was the third inning departure of Che-Hsuan Lin. Jered Stanley replaced Lin in the batting order and played left field, moving Mailman over to center. After the game, Red Sox manager Chad Epperson said that Lin, who has played in 112 games this season for Salem, experienced some pain in his left hand and was removed in a precautionary measure. The hand will be checked on Wednesday and Lin is said to be "day-to-day."

The Red Sox and Hillcats continue their mid-week series on Wednesday night, with Dave McKae on the hill for Salem opposite Bryan Morris for Lynchburg in a 7:05 start at Lewis-Gale Field.
