Earthquakes Sign Brazilian Defender Fabio da Silva

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has signed Brazilian defender Fabio da Silva. He will be available to play this Saturday, Aug. 22 against the Kansas City Wizards. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are excited to add a player of the caliber of Fabio da Silva to our roster," said General Manager John Doyle. "He can play the ball out of the back and is a solid defender. He will help strengthen our backline's depth and add some good experience."

Da Silva most recently played for Rio Branco in the Brazilian league and served as their captain, helping lead his side to a fourth-placen finish in 2009, his second stint with the club. Da Silva has played for a variety of clubs in both Brazil and Serbia. Along with Rio Branco (2009 and 2002), da Silva has spent time with Brazilian sides Clube Nautico Capibaribe (2008), Treze (2001), Campinense (2001), and Sport Club Recife (1997-2001). Clubs in Serbia that da Silva has represented during his career are; Napredak Krusevac (2007), Rad Belgrado (2002-2005, 2007) and Red Star Belgrade (2005-2006).

Fabio da Silva's accomplishments throughout his career include two junior championships with Sport Club Recife in 1997 and 1999. He also won an Acreano championship with Rio Branco in 2002, participated in the UEFA in 2005 with Red Star, won the Serbian championships in 2005-06 and 2006-07 with Red Star, and won the Serbian Cup in 2005 and 2006 as well.
