Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CHIVAS USA RETURNS TO THE HOME DEPOT CENTER TO TAKE ON TORONTO FC THIS SATURDAY: Chivas USA will play its first home game in more than a month this Saturday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. PT against Toronto FC at The Home Depot Center. The Red-and-White enter the match on the heels of a 2-0 victory at the New York Red Bulls last Saturday, the last of three straight road games for the club. Chivas USA now sits tied for fourth place in the Western Conference with 30 points and a record of 9-7-3 (W-L-T), but is just two points out of second place and has played two fewer games than most of its divisional rivals. Toronto comes into the game with a record of 8-7-6, also with 30 points, and is in third place in the East. A special "Kids Pack" is available for Saturday's game; for each adult ticket purchased, one child (16 and under) gets in for free (8 ticket maximum). Deals start at just $15; for more information, call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
FORWARD JESÃS PADILLA PRESENTED TO MEDIA AT TUESDAY PRESS CONFERENCE: Chivas USA forward Jesús Padilla, acquired on Monday from Chivas de Guadalajara, was presented to media at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon at The Home Depot Center. The 22-year-old Padilla, who was born in San Jose, Calif. but has been with Guadalajara since 2001, was introduced by Chivas USA President and CEO Shawn Hunter and Head Coach Preki. "I'm very excited to be here," said Padilla. "I want to thank Preki for giving me the opportunity to be in the squad. I'm ready to step up to the plate." Photos, audio and video from the press conference is available at Dentro del Rebaño, the official blog of Chivas USA, at dentrodelrebano.com, as well as at cdchivsausa.com.
ZACH THORNTON CONTINUES STRONG IN 2009, EARNING EIGHTH SHUTOUT: Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton returned from a hamstring injury in time to earn his eighth shutout of the season in last Saturday's 2-0 win against the New York Red Bulls, and lowered his league-best goals against average to just 0.83. His shutout mark is second in MLS behind Houston's Pat Onstad, and Thornton has also tied for second (with San Jose's Joe Cannon) on the all-time MLS shutout list, with 66. The Comeback of the Year candidate also earned his sixth MLS All-Star nomination last month, his first such honor since 2003.
CHIVAS USA ACQUIRES COLOMBIAN DEFENDER YAMITH CUESTA AS PART OF SEVERAL ROSTER MOVES: Chivas USA acquired defender Yamith Cuesta, a member of the Colombian Under-20 National Team, on loan from Colombian side Expreso Rojo, in a move that was announced on Friday. Cuesta, 20, made his debut in the Colombian First Division with Bogotá club Santa Fé in 2007, playing 24 matches for the club and scoring two goals, and has since been with Expreso Rojo in the second division. In other roster moves, defender Jim Curtin and forward Ante Razov were added to the Disabled List. Curtin is expected to miss 4-6 months with surgery due to a peroneus brevis tear in his left ankle, while Razov is on the DL due to right ankle tendonitis.
