Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA - The Indians erased an early 1-0 deficit and inched to within a half game of the Red Sox in the second half standings with Saturday night's 5-1 victory at Lewis-Gale Field. Adam Davis went 3-4 with two doubles, Roman Pena went 2-2 with two walks, and the Indians broke a 1-all sixth inning tie with three runs off Salem reliever Kyle Fernandes to take a lead they would not relinquish. David Roberts earned the win in relief for Kinston, retiring all seven batters he faced over two and a third innings. Fernandes suffered his third straight loss, falling to 4-3 after he allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in his only inning of work.

For the first time in 2009, the fans of Salem were treated to a major league rehab start. Indians lefthander Scott Lewis, battling his way back to Cleveland, yielded one run on two hits in three and two thirds innings. Che-Hsuan Lin led off the first inning with a single to right field. With two outs, Anthony Rizzo singled to left field to score Lin and give Salem the early 1-0 lead. Little did the Sox know that their offense would be completely subdued for the remainder of the evening.

Following the Rizzo single, Kinston pitching retired 19 straight Salem batters before David Mailman singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning. A triumvirate of relievers, Roberts, Dallas Cawiezell, and Jonathan Holt, combined to blank the Sox over the final five and a third frames, allowing just two hits. Rizzo finished 2-4 with a double, but the rest of the lineup went 2-27 as Kinston continued their recent dominance over the Salem Sox, winning their sixth straight from the Red Sox.

Salem starter Stephen Fife struck out a season-high eight batters and only allowed one run in five innings, but received a no-decision on Saturday evening. Cord Phelps jacked a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth for the only run off Fife. An inning later, the Indians took advantage of three Fernandes walks to leap on top for good. With the bases-loaded, the third consecutive walk to Pena forced in the go-ahead run to make it 2-1. Two batters later, Tim Fedroff drilled a two-run single to break it open 4-1. Fedroff went 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and his on-base streak to 34 games.

Jose Capellan took over for Fernandes and did not permit an earned run in two innings of work. The Indians did scrape an unearned tally off Capellan, however, as Ole Sheldon reached on Zach Borowiak's fielding error to start the seventh and scored on Davis' RBI double to make it 5-1. Derrick Loop tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for the Red Sox to lower his ERA to 1.78, but the Red Sox managed just one baserunner in the ninth inning and Tim Federowicz, 0-8 so far in the series, grounded out to end the ballgame. Brad Correll, making his debut for the Salem Red Sox after signing with Boston yesterday, went 0-4 batting cleanup and playing right field.

The Red Sox now need a win in Sunday's series finale, not only to maintain a lead in the standings, but also to split the season series. Through 19 games, the Indians, winners of six straight from the Sox, are leading 10-9.

Seth Garrison is set to start opposite Paulo Espino on Sunday evening, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05.
