Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC (August 12, 2009) - Less than a week ago, Salem scored five runs in a four game series. On Wednesday evening in Myrtle Beach, the Red Sox offense unloaded on Pelican pitching, scoring eight times alone in the sixth inning to roll to a 16-2 demolition of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Everyone in the lineup recorded at least one hit, and six Salem batters at multiple hits with Mike Jones leading the way with four hits and four RBI. The run production was spread evenly across the board, with eight different players driving in runs and eight scoring runs. Jered Stanley was the lone Sock who did not drive in a run, while Kris Negron had three hits but never scored in the game that became a laugher in the middle innings.
Salem enjoyed a comfortable 6-2 lead after five innings, but completely broke it open in the top of the sixth when 13 men came to the plate and eight of them scored. Of Salem's 20 hits in the game, 16 were singles and none were homers, but the Sox went an unbelievable 12-20 with runners in scoring position, a far cry from the .251 that Salem has hit with runners at second or third so far this year.
After a frustrating season in which he has received far too little run support, Kyle Weiland earned his fourth victory with five strong innings on the hill for the Sox. Though Weiland has 13 times allowed three or fewer earned runs and not received the win, the righthander out of Notre Dame struck out five and picked up his first triumph since June 29. The Red Sox bullpen continued its scoreless streak, with Robert Coello retiring nine of the ten batters he faced over three scoreless innings and Derrick Loop tossing a perfect ninth to end the blowout victory. Coello struck out five and Loop K'd one, giving Red Sox pitchers 11 strikeouts in the ballgame.
But the contest will be remembered much more for the offensive outburst from the Salem Sox. After scoring 35 runs in 15 games through yesterday's doubleheader opener, the Sox have since erupted for 26 runs on 36 hits in two games, in which Salem has batted .456! The contagious onslaught has pulled Salem two and half games ahead of Myrtle Beach and Kinston in the Southern Division standings.
With three hits in consecutive games, Tim Federowicz has raised his average from .210 to .243. Federowicz, who led the South Atlantic League in batting in the first half, went 3-5 with three RBI on Wednesday. David Mailman and Negron each tallied three hits and two RBI, while Che-Hsuan Lin finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI, Aaron Reza recorded two hits, three runs, and an RBI, and Jon Hee scored three times despite finishing with just one double and one walk. All 16 runs were scored off the first four Pelican pitchers. The starter Brandon Beachy, who threw four innings, took the loss, while Jaye Chapman and Cory Gearrin each threw scoreless innings in the final frames of the one-sided affair.
Having outscored the Pelicans 29-5 in the first three games of the series, Salem aims to sweep Myrtle on Thursday with the first pitch coming at 7:05. Dave McKae gets the ball for the Red Sox opposite Richard Sullivan for the Pelicans.
For Red Sox fans in the Roanoke Valley, Thursday's broadcast will be heard exclusively on the internet at salemsox.com and milb.com. Flagship Station NewsTalk 960 WFIR will be airing coverage of Washington Redskins preseason action.
