Drive's No-Hit Bid Goes Sour Late, Lose 7-3 to GreenJackets

July 30, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Augusta, GA - The Drive (54-47, 15-18) took a 3-0 lead late into Thursday night's at Lake Olmstead Stadium. More importantly, the tandem of Nick Hagadone and Mike Lee had not yet allowed an Augusta GreenJackets (55-48, 20-14) hit.

That was until the bottom of the seventh, when the ‘Jackets tagged the right-handed Lee for six hits and six runs, on their way to a 7-3 win. Charlie Culberson and Ehire Adrianza each collected an RBI-single, while Johnny Monell added an RBI-double to tie the game.

Following a hit batsman and another single, Lee was relieved by Chad Povich with one out and the bases loaded. After striking out the first batter he faced, Povich surrendered a bases clearing double by Josh Mazzola.

The GreenJackets added an insurance run an inning later when Adrianza slapped an RBI-single past Drive second baseman Ryan Dent.

Greenville built their three-run lead with single runs in the second, sixth, and seventh innings. The Drive's first run came when Ryan Dent walked and scored as Oscar Tejeda hit an infield single that was coupled with a two-base throwing error on Culberson.

Another Augusta error helped the Drive extend their two leads in the sixth inning. Casey Kelly led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by pitcher Eric Stolp. Following a Ryan Lavarnway ground out that moved Kelly to third, Jered Stanley delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Drive closed out their scoring in the seventh as Will Middlebrooks and Dent began the inning with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Pete Hissey singled through the left side for an RBI.

While the Drive were slowly building a lead, their pitching staff was keeping the GreenJackets hitless. In his ninth start as he continues to recover from Tommy John Surgery, Nick Hagadone tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, issuing three walks and striking out two.

Prior to Lee's relief outing turning chaotic in the bottom of the seventh, he retired the first nine batters he faced, including four strikeouts.

The Drive and GreenJackets continue their four-game series on Friday with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Fabian Williamson (6-3, 2.28 ERA), a lefty, will toe the rubber for Greenville as Augusta counters with right hander Mike Loree (7-6, 4.34 ERA).

The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Tuesday, August 4th for a four-game series against the Lexington Legends. Tuesday is also Green Day at Fluor Field, when the Drive celebrate the 178th birthday of the City of Greenville. One citizen is also recognized for their drive and dedication into helping shape Greenville into the city it has become. This year's honoree is C. Dan Joyner. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
