LATIMORE REPEATS HEROICS

Charleston, WV (July 26, 2009) - One night after belting a walk off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning against Savannah, Quincy Latimore victimized the Charleston Riverdogs with a pair of homeruns on Sunday evening, including the game winner in the bottom of the ninth inning as West Virginia opened the four game series with a 9-8 victory over the Riverdogs at Appalachian Power Park.

Corban Joseph belted a two-run double in the top of the first inning to give the Riverdogs an early lead, but West Virginia answered quickly on Tony Sanchez's RBI single in the bottom of the first and tied the game two innings later when Kyle Morgan's sacrifice fly scored Robbie Grossman. The Riverdogs plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take their largest lead of the game. Jeff Farnham drove in two of his four runs on the night on a homerun, his first of the season and Tommy Baldridge came in later in the fourth after Abraham Almonte grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

The Power made it a one run game again in the fifth inning when Morgan belted a two-run shot off the batter's eye in straight away center field. Farnham struck again for the Riverdogs in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Taylor Grote. West Virginia responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take their first lead of the game. Sanchez belted an RBI single and Latimore hit his first homer of the night, a three-run shot to give the Power an 8-6 edge.

The Riverdogs did not go quietly, and scored twice with two outs in the ninth inning to tie the game. Grote was on first base when Farnham doubled into left center field, bringing Grote home to cut the deficit to one. Farnham came home moments later on Baldridge's base hit to center field. Charleston right hander Jeff Williams retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning, before Latimore belted a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left field to end the game. It was his ninth homer of the season, tying him with Calvin Anderson for the team lead.

Wilson Ortiz (3-3) allowed a pair of runs on three hits in the ninth inning but hung on for the victory. Jeff Williams (1-1) allowed Latimore's homer in the ninth and was tagged with the loss. Noah Krol tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the Power.

West Virginia improved to 42-56 overall, and 15-13 in the second half after the win, while the Riverdogs fell to 52-48 overall and 13-17 in the second half after the loss. Quincy Latimore has six extra base hits over his last two games, and paced the Power with his 3-for-5 performance. He has hit safely in his last 11 games and knocked in four runs. Starling Marte's doubled to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and he has reached in 23 straight games. Greg Picart reached twice and has reached safely in 14 straight games. Tony Sanchez reached four times, extending his on base streak to 16 games.

West Virginia will continue the four game series against the Charleston Riverdogs at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. The Power will start right hander Hunter Strickland (0-0, 0.00) and the Riverdogs will counter with left hander Trent Lare (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
