Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Hickory, NC - With two outs and runners on at the corners, Edwin Quirarte's 1-1 offering to Hickory's David Paisano bounced to the backstop to score Matt West from third in the bottom of the 10th to give the Hickory Crawdads a 3-2 win in a series opener against the Augusta GreenJackets.
The late âDads rally spoiled local product Aaron King's best 2009 effort. Hailing from nearby Newton, North Carolina, King fired seven strong innings and allowed just one run on four hits without a walk and with five strikeouts. It's only the second time this year King hasn't allowed a walk in a start.
Augusta took an early 1-0 lead on Wendell Fairley's RBI double in the third inning. With men at the corners, Vladimir Frias hit a slow roller down the first base line and with Fairley breaking late down the third base line he was easily thrown out at home plate by pitcher Wimer Font. The Jackets would strand the remaining baserunners, missing out on one of their best run-scoring opportunities.
King held the Crawdads at bay until the two-out seventh inning double to right field by Jared Bolden. He came around to score on Christian Santana's double to tie the game.
Juan Perez knocked in the go-ahead run for the GreenJackets in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to give King a short-lived lead. Mitch Lively delivered a scoreless eighth inning but in the ninth Edwin Quirarte served up a one-out solo home run to Erik Morrison to tie the game. He induced a double play shortly thereafter to send the game into extras.
The Jackets went quickly in the tenth before Santana reached to open the bottom of the tenth. He was forced out at second on a fielder's choice and after a Miguel Alfonzo single put runners at first and second, Mike Hollander bounced into another fielder's choice to put the winning run at third before the Quirarte wild pitch.
Quirarte (3-1) gave up two runs on three hits to take the loss. Fabian Castillo (3-4) pitched a scoreless tenth to take the win for the Crawdads.
Kyle Nicholson (6-8, 3.02) takes the ball in the second game of the series on Monday to face lefty Martin Perez (5-5, 2.50). First pitch from L.P. Frans Stadium against the Crawdads is 3:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home for a nine-game homestand spread across ten days, starting on July 30th against the Greenville Drive. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
