Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads won their second straight game in walk-off fashion, with a 3-2 win in 10 innings against the Augusta GreenJackets before 3,592 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Both starters gave up only one run in the low-scoring affair, with RHP Wilmer Font allowing a tally in the third inning and LHP Aaron King, a Newton, NC, native and graduate of Fred T. Foard High School, surrendering a run in the seventh.
The GreenJackets (17-13, 52-47) started the third inning against Font with a walk drawn by C Matt Klimas, who then scored from first on an RBI double by LF Wendell Fairly. Font got back on track, retiring the final eight batters he faced and not allowing another run in his five innings of work.
King allowed only two hits through his first six innings of work, but the Crawdads (17-12, 50-48) put a blemish on his homecoming to the Hickory area with a run in the seventh inning. DH Jared Bolden extended the frame with a two-out double and scored on an RBI double hit by LF Cristian Santana to left-center field, tying the game, 1-1.
After RHP Corey Ragsdale put in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, RHP Matt Nevarez took over on the mound for the Crawdads to begin the top of the eighth, when an unearned run came in for the GreenJackets to put them back in the lead, 2-1. Nevarez got out of the rest of the eighth with no further damage done and tossed a scoreless ninth as well, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth with Augusta only up by a run.
The GreenJackets sent RHP Edwin Quirarte (3-1) to the mound to close the game, but 1B Erik Morrison instead belted a solo bomb with one out in the frame to tie the score, 2-2, and send the game to extra innings.
After RHP Fabio Castillo (3-4) retired the three GreenJackets he faced in the top of the tenth in a row, the Crawdads struck for the game-winning run in the very next frame. 3B Matt West reached on a fielder's choice, putting a runner on at first with one out. RF Miguel Alfonzo then grounded a single through the left side of the infield, advancing West into scoring position. 2B Mike Hollander bounced a ball to short, which retired Alfonzo at second on the fielder's choice, but also advanced West to third with CF David Paisano stepping up to the plate. Quirarte misfired with a wild pitch that got back to the backstop, and West raced in from third to end the game and lift the Crawdads to the 3-2 victory. Castillo earned his second straight win for the Crawdads, while Quirarte was tagged with the loss for Augusta.
