Rock Cats make four transactions

NEW BRITAIN, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League had four roster transactions over the weekend, with one player receiving a promotion to Triple-A, two others arriving in the Hardware City, and one departing for Single-A Ft. Myers. The associated details are as follows:

RHP Yohan Pino, a 25-year-old resident of Aragua, Venezuela, has been promoted to Triple-A Rochester in the International League. The 6'0"/175-pound hurler has been one of New Britain hotter hurlers of late, going 4-1 since leaving the Rock Cats bullpen to join the club's starting rotation. His ERA was 3.19 at the time of his advancement. In portions of three seasons with the Rock Cats, Pino has compiled a total of 14 Wins. This year his Strike Out/Base on Ball ratio stands at 64/16. Yohan joined the Red Wings after the Rock Cats concluded their game on Saturday (7/18) evening in Reading, PA;

RHP Mike McCardell, a native of Westchester, PA and former Kutztown University Golden Bear, has arrived from Ft. Myers to give the New Britain rotation additional depth. McCardell is a 6'5"/220-pound hurler who has been a winner at every level in his professional career. Prior to this season in Ft. Myers, where he was 9-6 with a solid 3.93 ERA, the 24-year-old spent the 2008 campaign at low-A Beloit, finishing 9-4 with a 2.86 ERA and racking up an impressive 139 strikeouts in 135.1 innings. In 2007, his first year in the Twins' farm system, he went a combined 7-1 between the Gulf Coast League Twins and Elizabethton. Baseball America tabbed the big righty as Minnesota's 27th best Prospect for 2009 as part of their annual team-by-team rankings. McCardell will make his Eastern League debut in New Britain tonight.

C Jeff Christy, a 25-year-old product of the University of Nebraska where, among other accomplishments, he served as New York Yankees' Joba Chamberlain's battery mate, Is rejoining New Britain after spending a portion of 2009 with Rochester in the International League. The former Cornhusker will be in uniform tonight to begin his third tour with New Britain after starting the year in Triple-A Rochester. Selected by Minnesota in the 6th Round of the 2006 Draft, Christy has appeared in 22 games for the 2009 Rock Cats, posting a .172 BA to go with 6 RBI. He appeared in 13 contests for the Red Wings where he batted .200.

C Allan De San Miguel, a 21-year-old resident of Perth, Australia, has been reassigned to Ft. Myers in the Single-A Florida State League, a place where he batted .294 in 15 games before his June 19 call-up to New Britain.
