Suns Take Series Lead with Monday Win over Braves

Pearl, Miss. - The Jacksonville Suns (45-40, 10-5) scored six runs in the seventh inning, running away with a 9-4 victory over the Mississippi Braves (37-47, 6-8) in front of 1,659 Monday night at Trustmark Park.

Suns starter Cristhian Martinez (7-2) picked up the victory, giving up two earned runs and eight hits over six innings of work. Braves reliever Deunte Heath (2-5) fell in the relief loss, charged with four runs on three hits over one and one-thirds innings.

The Suns started the scoring in the first inning when Lorenzo Scott came in on Mississippi first baseman Freddie Freeman's error on a Logan Morrison ground ball for a 1-0 score. Later in the inning Scott Cousins singled home Morrison for a 2-0 lead.

Mississippi tied the game in the third inning on RBI singles from Jason Heyward and Concepcion Rodriguez for a 2-2 score.

The Suns were unable to record a hit from the second inning through the sixth inning against Braves starter Jeff Lyman and reliever Deunte Heath. Jacksonville finally broke through against Heath in the seventh inning, as Brad Davis doubled in Kevin Randel for a 3-2 lead. Davis later came in to score on a wild pitch for a 4-2 lead. Bryan Dumesnil entered the game and gave up a walk to load the bases before Mike Stanton doubled to the left field corner to drive in a pair of runs for a 6-2 score. Kevin Randel later singled home two more runs to open the 8-2 lead.

Jacksonville added a ninth run in the ninth inning, a Lee Mitchell RBI single for a 9-2 lead. Mississippi ended the scoring in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, two-run triple from Jason Heyward for a 9-4 final.
