Pearl, MS - The M-Braves got slammed by the Jacksonville Suns Sunday afternoon, 14-3. 1,556 fans saw the Suns plate seven runs in the fourth inning, four on a grand slam, and turn a 1-1 tie into a blowout. The Braves set new highs for hits (19) and runs (14) allowed in a game.
Lorenzo Scott walked and scored in the first to put the Suns up early, but the M-Braves answered in the second. Eric Campbell doubled and scored on a Matt Young sac-fly to knot the score at one. It was all Jacksonville from there.
The Suns sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and seven of them scored. Tim Torres' RBI-triple and Logan Morrison's grand slam highlighted the frame. After four, they led 8-1. The Suns added three more runs in the fifth.
Brad Davis doubled and scored the Suns ninth run and Ryan Klosterman's two-run homer made it 11-1. The M-Braves got a sac-fly from Eric Campbell in the sixth the made it 11-2.
The onslaught continued in the seventh. Six singles, a wild pitch and a sac-fly led to three more runs and a 14-2 lead for the Suns. Jason Heyward's double in the ninth plated Matt Young with the Braves third run.
Richard Sullivan got the start for the Braves and he gave up seven runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Brett Butts surrendered four runs in 1.2 innings and Tommy Palica gave up three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Bryan Dumesnil didn't allow a run in 1.1 innings. Kody Kirkland came on to pitch the ninth inning and tossed a scoreless inning. He has now played every position on the field for the M-Braves except catcher in 2009.
Aaron Thompson surrendered two runs on six hits and improved to 4-8 on the year. Adalberto Mendez threw two scoreless innings and Matt Peterson tossed a shutout ninth.
Mississippi and Jacksonville will play game three of this four-game series at Trustmark Park at 7:05 Monday night. The M-Braves starter has yet to be announced while the Suns will go with righty Christhian Martinez.
Monday will be Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Night as well as Dollar Dog Monday when all hot dogs, excluding foot longs, will be $1. It'll also be Military Monday when any member of any US Military Division can get field level seats for themselves and their families for only $2. It's also Church Bulletin Monday when families can get half-priced field level seats by presenting a church bulletin. Monday's are also Chevron Bonus Monday when tickets are buy-one-get-one-free upon presentation of a Chevron credit card.
