Jaxx Win Fourth Straight

JACKSON, TENN. (July 5, 2009) - For the second consecutive day, the Diamond Jaxx (9-5) hit five homeruns as they knock of the Huntsville Stars (7-7) at Joe Davis Stadium 11 to 8. The Jaxx win their fourth straight game for the first time this season and now have won eight of their last ten games to lead the North Division. The Jaxx lead Tennessee by a game and a half at the end of play Sunday. Greg Halman continues to pound Stars pitching Sunday going 3-for-5 again with two homers and three RBI, including a double. Halman is now 6-for-10 in the series with four homeruns and six RBI. The Jaxx have hit 10 homeruns and scored 21 runs in the first two games at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Jaxx jumped out to a 4-0 lead as the Jaxx got doubles from Ezequiel Carrera, Greg Halman and Mike Wilson to open the game. Johan Limonta pounded a two-run shot and the Jaxx led 4-0.

After Huntsville got on the board in the bottom of the first, the Jaxx posted three more in the second. Greg Halman picked up his second hit of the game, a solo homer to give the Jaxx a 5-1 advantage. Marshall Hubbard walked next and then Mike Wilson hit his second homer in two days giving the Jaxx a 7-1 lead.

Mike Wilson continued to swing a hot bat driving in two in the top of the fourth. Greg Halman and Marshall Hubbard came around on the double to put the Jaxx up 9-2. Then in the top of the fifth, Matt Mangini hit his sixth homer the season putting the Jaxx on top 10-2.

Luis Pena (1-0), the Diamond Jaxx starter goes 5.0 innings. Pena was making his first start since April 13th. Pena gave up three runs on six hits and struck out three while walking three in his first game back from the DL.

Greg Halman hit his second homer of the game in the top of the eighth inning, his 20th of the season to lead the Southern League. Halman's second blast of the game gave the Jaxx an 11-4 margin leading into the bottom of the eighth.

After Huntsville grabbed a run in the bottom of the eighth, they went into the bottom of the ninth, trailing 11-5. The Stars mounted a bit of a comeback against Jaxx lefty, Danny Christensen. Freddy Parejo brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, Chuck Caufield doubled in a run and J.R. Hopf ‘s reach on a fielding error score the third run of the inning. But, Jaxx reliever Anthony Varvaro (S. 3) stopped the bleeding and earned his 3rd save of the season.

The Jaxx ran Donovan Hand (6-2) from the game after the second and he takes the loss for Huntsville. He gave up four runs on four hits through two innings. J.R. Hopf, Chuck Caufield and Kevin Mellilo led the way offensively for Huntsville all picking up two RBI in the game.

The Jaxx have a chance to take the series on Monday night, leading two games to none in the series. RHP Justin Souza (5-6, 3.42) makes the start as the Jaxx look for their fifth win in a row. For Huntsville, LHP Bobby Bramhall (4-5, 5.73) will try and slow down the Jaxx bats that have produced 10 homers and 21runs in the first two games of the series.
