Myrtle Beach, SC (July 2, 2009) - Cody Johnson's 21st homer of the 2009 season, a third-inning grand slam off Casey Kelly, helped ease the Pelicans past the Red Sox 8-1 on Thursday evening on BB&T Coastal Field. Limited to just four hits, the Red Sox offense went quiet for the first time since the All-Star Break, as Salem fell to 6-2 in the half.
Jacob Thompson earned the win with seven innings of superb relief. After Jose Ortegano, limited to two innings due to his recent stint on the DL, tossed a couple scoreless frames, Thompson went the rest of the way. The only blemish was a solo homer from Jason Place with one out in the seventh inning. Aside from that dinger, the Pelican righthander struck out six and held the Red Sox offense to just three hits.
Kelly struggled with his command early and the Pelicans made him pay, scoring two runs on four extra-base hits, including a Benji Johnson homer, over the first two innings. In the third, Kelly walked three batters and gave up an RBI single before Cody Johnson blasted his first grand slam of the year, a deep bomb over the right field wall. Kelly pitched solid fourth and fifth innings, but gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks over five frames, with just two strikeouts on the evening. Jose Capellan pitched decently in relief, allowing just one run on three hits over three innings of work.
Cody Johnson finished 2-4 with five RBI, while Cole Miles and Jason Heyward each compiled multiple-hit evening as well. Salem's Zach Borowiak was the only Red Sox batter to finish with multiple-hits, going 2-3 in defeat.
The Red Sox will look to avenge the series opening loss on Friday evening when Bryan Price pitches against Eric Cordier, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
