Hill City Howlers News Release
Winston-Salem claimed an 11-10 win over Lynchburg on Logan Johnson's two-run walk-off home run at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Thursday night. The Hillcats square off against the Dash in the opener of a three-game weekend series at City Stadium Friday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Lynchburg seized the early lead in the top of the first. Chase d'Arnaud smacked a leadoff triple to left-center field. Alex Presley drove in d'Arnaud with a sacrifice fly to give the Cats a 1-0 edge.
The Dash struck back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Dale Mollenhauer belted a solo home run off Lynchburg starter Justin Wilson to start the frame and Greg Paiml followed with a double. Paiml scored on Brent Morel's one-out RBI double and Morel reached third a groundout by Seth Loman. Morel scored when Wilson uncorked a wild pitch, which gave Winston-Salem a 3-1 lead.
The Cats immediately answered with a pair of runs in the fourth. After Winston-Salem starter Anthony Cater plunked Eric Fryer, Jamie Romak socked a two-run home run over the left-field wall and Lynchburg took a 4-3 lead.
Winston-Salem knotted the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth when Johnson crushed a leadoff home run over the right-field fence off Wilson.
Lynchburg regained the lead in the fifth when Romak bashed a three-run homer off Carter, which put the Cats in front 7-4.
One inning later, the Hillcats increased their advantage when Matt Hague blasted a two-out, two-run home run off Dash reliever Sergio Santos that made it a 9-4 game.
With the Hillcats leading 9-5, the Dash took advantage off several Lynchburg errors in the bottom of the seventh. Paiml led off the frame with a single and reached second on a groundout by Joel Persichina. Paiml advanced to third when Morel reached on an error by Jordy Mercer. Loman followed with an RBI groundout that plated Paiml.
Salvador Sanchez ripped an RBI double that scored Morel. Moments later, Sanchez scored when d'Arnaud committed a fielding error and a throwing error on a ground ball of the bat of Tyler Kuhn. Johnson drove in Kuhn with a ground-rule double, which evened the score at 9-9.
The Hillcats broke the tie in the top of the eighth when Dash reliever Levi Maxwell surrendered an RBI double to d'Arnaud after walking Jose De Los Santos to begin the frame.
Cats closer R. J. Rodriguez was called on in the bottom of the ninth to save the game for Lynchburg. But Rodriguez plunked Sanchez with a pitch to start the frame. Kuhn advanced Sanchez to second on a sacrifice bunt and Johnson belted a two-run home run, which gave the Dash an 11-10 victory.
Miguel Socolovich (2-1) earned the win in relief for Winston-Salem. Rodriguez (4-2) suffered his first blown save of the season and took the loss for Lynchburg.
The two teams will meet in game one of a three-game series on Friday night at City Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
