Potomac Nationals News Release

TODAY: The Potomac Nationals begin a July 4th Weekend Extravaganza from Pfitzner Stadium when they play the geographic rival Frederick Keys in game one of a four-game series from Woodbridge with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. The P-Nats currently lead the overall season-series, 7-3, in this Carolina League edition of the "Battle of the Beltway." Frederick was the last road team to lose a series to Potomac from Pfitzner Stadium as Trent Jewett's ballclub swept the Keys in two games in a rain-shortened series from May 1-2. Since then, the P-Nats are just 0-6-1 in their last seven home series.

Still, Potomac has enjoyed facing Frederick in 2009 as the club is hitting at a .270 clip in 10 games with 17 home runs, 20 doubles, 21 stolen bases in 29 attempts. The pitching staff has been solid two against the Orioles' Carolina League affiliate posting an ERA of 3.50 (35ER/90.0 IP). Frederick native Dan Leatherman actually owns two victories and one save against his hometown ballclub.

TODAYS OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Nate Nery, 23, was drafted in the 18th round of the 2006 First- Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles out of Stetson University (FL). He pitched three seasons for Stetson and while playing for the Hatters in 2006, Nery went 7-5 with a 4.53 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 87.1 innings. The southpaw out of Moon Township, PA has pitched the previous three seasons for both Aberdeen (NYPL) and Delmarva (SAL) and compiled a record of 15-11 with a 4.05 ERA. Last season with the Delmarva Shorebirds, Nery went 7-3 in 15 starts and was nearly flawless down the stretch closing out the year with a 4-0 record and a 1.18 ERA in his last five starts. In one start against Potomac in 2009, Nery allowed four runs on eight hits in 6.2 IP on June 14 from Frederick - a game won by the P-Nats 5-4 in 10 innings on a solo homer by Sean Rooney.
