Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON (Thursday, June 25, 2009) -- Houston Dynamo players Stuart Holden and Brian Ching were among the 23 players named to the United States roster for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, U.S. Soccer announced Thursday.
The regional championship tournament will take place July 3-26 in 13 different venues around the United States, including Houston. Holden and Ching will join the U.S. squad in Seattle on Monday, June 29, will miss at least three Dynamo games, and could miss the entire month of July. They will be available for Sunday's road game against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Ching, 31, has 36 appearances and 9 goals all-time for the United States, making him the highest-scoring player on the roster. Ching was expected to be named to the U.S. roster for the FIFA Confederations Cup but missed the tournament due to injury. He has five goals in nine appearances for Houston this year, giving him 18 goals in his last 28 MLS regular season games. Ching helped the United States to the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup title.
Holden, 23, hopes to make his senior national team debut in the tournament. He narrowly missed out on his first cap earlier this year when he was injured the night before a January friendly against Sweden. The Houston resident has played for U.S. national teams at several different age levels, including the U-23 squad at last summer's Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Holden has played every minute of 16 competitive games for the Dynamo this season, contributing four goals and three assists.
The Houston Dynamo are a Major League Soccer franchise that has won two MLS Cup championships in its first three seasons and qualified to represent the United States in four consecutive regional championships. Currently on an 11-game unbeaten streak, the Dynamo will next play at home on Saturday, July 25, against the New England Revolution.
