Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Bulls went home empty-handed after squandering a stellar outing from starting pitcher Jason Cromer and failing to plate runners in scoring position as they lost 4-0 in extra innings Wednesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Cromer tossed eight scoreless innings in which he allowed only two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. His eight frames of work tied a season-high for Bulls pitchers set by Carlos Hernandez May 30th.
Durham and Lehigh Valley's bullpen's both kept the game scoreless with the stalemate finally ending in the top of the 11th inning. The Iron Pigs plated four runs, two earned, off Bulls' closer Dale Thayer.
The story of the game was the missed opportunities by the Bulls. They went 1-for-10 as a team with runners in scoring position and also stranded 10 total runners.
Lehigh Valley's pitching staff was also on top of its game keeping the Bulls scoreless throughout the 11-inning match. Former Durham Bull Cedrick Bowers picked up the win after coming in with one out in the ninth and tossing 2 2/3 shutout innings to close out the game.
With the loss, the Bulls have dropped seven of their last eight and a season-high four games in a row. They look to avoid a series sweep against Lehigh Valley Thursday with right-handed starting pitcher Matt DeSalvo taking the mound for Durham.
