St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 17, 2009) - While everyone recalls Jackie Robinson breaking the baseball color barrier, not as much fanfare surrounded Larry Doby's doing so in the American League. Doby, who signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1947, will be honored with a night dedicated to him during the Saints upcoming six-game homestand June 19-21, 23-25.
On Tuesday, June 23 the Saints will celebrate Larry Doby Passion for the Community Night presented by the United States Postal Service. The evening will honor the achievements of Doby while the Saints don Negro League uniforms of the Newark Eagles and Homestead Grays. Bill Veeck, father of Saints owner Mike Veeck, was the man who signed Doby to become the first African American to play in the American League. The Saints pay tribute to Doby through many community initiatives including the Larry Doby Passion for the Community Program that enables businesses to purchase tickets to Saints games for disadvantaged youth. In support of this initiative the Saints have donated 1.000 tickets to organizations serving children throughout the Twin Cities Metro Area.
Prior to Larry Doby Night, the Saints will host the Wichita Wingnuts for a three-game series beginning Friday, June 19 with Push Up or Shut Up! presented by the U.S. Army. Prior to the game, future soldiers will participate in an on-field swear-in and current soldiers will participate in a push up contest at the end of the second inning in a contest with 93X, who will be on-site for a live remote broadcast. This night isn't for the faint of heart or weak. Be prepared for the toughest workout of your life, but look good by brushing up for Metro Dentalcare Friday.
On Saturday, June 20 we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the movie The Jerk on an Applebee's Saturday with the Saints. If you know someone who's a jerk, if you're a jerk, or perhaps you just like the movie The Jerk, then this night is for you.
On Sunday June 21, we honor Dad's during this 1:05 p.m. contest on Midsommar Father's Day on a Bath Fitters and Kitchen Solvers Family Sunday. What better way to let Dad know how much he means to you by bringing him out to a Saints game and enjoying the fun and entertainment at Midway Stadium. We pay homage to the Nordic tradition of Midsommar Father's Day, and after the game, kids run the bases and get autographs from the entire team.
Following the series opener versus Sioux Falls on Tuesday, June 23, the Saints host Legally Speaking on Wednesday, June 24 at 1:05 p.m. Judges, lawyers, plaintiffs, defendants and even jurors won't want to miss the game as we present literal interpretations of many famous Supreme Court cases. Also, fans are encouraged to arrive early to take part in the craziest tailgate party around with Saints players on Walser Wednesday.
The homestand concludes on Thursday night, June 25 at 7:05 p.m. with Til The Cows Come Home presented by Minnetronix. You can do a deal at the ballpark while enjoying the game on TDS Metrocom Business at the Ballpark Thursday.
Tickets for the entire six-game homestand and all 2009 Saints home games can be purchased in person at Midway Stadium, by calling 651-644-6659 or visiting saintsbaseball.com.
