Last Game

Earthquakes 1, Seattle FC 2; June 13, 2009; Qwest Field, Seattle, Washington

The San Jose Earthquakes lost 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field. Darren Huckerby, the 33-year-old former English star and MLS Newcomer of the Year with the Quakes in 2008 who was making his first start in two months, scored his first goal of the year in the 68th minute on a close-range blast set up by deft passing of Shea Salinas and Ryan Johnson to pull San Jose back within one. Goals from Freddie Ljungberg and Fredy Montero on either side of halftime staked Sounders FC to a two-goal lead. San Jose's Ryan Johnson missed a chance to knot the score at 2-2 in the 85th minute as Johnson's shot from 12 yards away on the right side slid outside the left post. Johnson's attempt was just wide left of a sliding Kasey Keller, Seattle's goalkeeper. The match marked the second meeting of the season in Seattle for the two teams. The Earthquakes dropped a 2-0 decision at Qwest on April 25. It was Seattle's last win of the 2009 season and only win in its previous nine matches. Cannon did everything in his power to keep the Quakes in the match. He made a pair of saves in the 23rd minute during a Sounders FC flurry, first turning back a Fredy Montero blast in the penalty area and then punching away a loose ball to end the threat. Cannon couldn't hold off a left-footed drive from Ljungberg as Sounders FC went up 1-0 in the 42nd minute. Ljungberg took a pass from Sebastien Le Toux on the left wing and drilled a 10-yard shot off the outstretched left hand of Cannon at the left post, but the ball found the back of the net. Montero cleaned up a header from Patrick Ianni at the left post, banging in a 5-yard shot to give Seattle a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute. The play started on Ljungberg's corner kick from the right side as Ianni's flicked header made it to the feet of Montero, who tallied his fifth goal of the season.

Last Match vs. Los Angeles Galaxy

San Jose Earthquakes 1, Los Angeles Galaxy 1; June 20, 2009; Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

The Earthquakes tied the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-1. Pablo Campos scored the first goal of his MLS career in the fifth minute off of an assist by Chris Leitch. The Galaxy equalized in the 76th minute on a goal by substitute Bryan Jordan. The San Jose Earthquakes met their arch-rivals LA Galaxy on Saturday and the visitors netted a second-half equalizer through Bryan Jordan to escape the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum with a 1-1 tie. Pablo Campos had opened the scoring for the home side after just five minutes, but Jordan's bullet header from a Landon Donovan cross leveled matters with 14 minutes remaining, giving the visitors a share of the points. The Quakes had promised to exploit their speed advantage up top prior to the game, and they made good on their vow after just five minutes. Chris Leitch's long ball out of the back found Campos in acres of space, and with plenty of time to set himself, he slotted the ball past L.A. goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to give San Jose a 1-0 lead. Suitably stung by conceding an early goal, the Galaxy created some good opportunities over the next few minutes. Donovan's eighth-minute cross picked out Kirovski at the far post, but the Galaxy forward hit his volley over the bar. Donovan then weaved his way through the San Jose defense four minutes later, but Cannon was off his line quickly and smothered the breakaway attempt of his former teammate. The Quakes were soon back on the attack. Campos' clever through ball in the 18th minute put Arturo Alvarez alone on Ricketts, and while Alvarez initially evaded Ricketts' challenge, he dithered on the ball too long, allowing the Galaxy 'keeper to recover and deflect the ball out for a corner kick. Alvarez's ensuing delivery was headed on goal by Campos, but Ricketts delivered a sharp save to his left to keep the margin at one. Chances became scarcer in the second half, and with the Galaxy in need of a goal, Arena brought on Jordan for Mike Magee in the 56th minute. The change seemed to spark the Galaxy, as Cannon had to be alert in the 73rd minute to touch away Kirovski's cross and then punch away the rebound with Donovan advancing. But that was a mere prelude to Jordan's equalizer in the 76th minute. Donovan's initial corner kick was cleared only as far as Dema Kovalenko, whose pass to Donovan was crossed back into the box, where Jordan's snap header beat Cannon to the far post.
