Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Starting pitcher Francisley Bueno allowed just two hits in five innings to pick up his fourth win of the season and also doubled and scored to help lead the Gwinnett Braves over the Indianapolis Indians 3-2 on Monday evening at Victory Field.
With the loss the Indians drop to 30-33 overall and 15-19 at home, while the win moves the Braves to 35-30 on the season and 19-12 on the road. The victory is the first ever for the franchise in Gwinnett at Victory Field and moves their record to 4-1 over the Tribe this season.
Bueno (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) collected the win to improve to 4-1 on the season in just his third start of the year as he held the Tribe scoreless in his longest outing of the campaign. The left hander not only picked up the win, but also ripped a double and scored the Braves' second run of the game in the third inning.
Bueno's two-bagger was one of four on the night for Gwinnett as LF Brandon Jones, RF Brian Barton and CF Reid Gorecki also added doubles that ended up accounting for four of the Braves' six total hits with each playing an important role in Gwinnett's three runs on the evening.
Jones led of the second with his double, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Barton's two-bagger to give the Braves the early 1-0 lead. Bueno then led off the third with his two-bagger, moved to third on a single by 2B J.C. Holt, and eventually trotted home on a sacrifice fly by SS Brooks Conrad.
It was Gorecki's double that proved to be the difference, however, as he drove in 1B Kody Kirkland with a two-bagger in the fifth inning, after Kirkland led off the frame with a single and moved into scoring position on Bueno's sacrifice bunt.
Tribe starter Daniel McCutchen (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) went seven innings for his second consecutive start, but was pinned with the loss to drop to 4-5 on the season after allowing three runs on six hits.
The Tribe bullpen continued to pitch well as relievers Mike Koplove (1.0 IP, 1 BB) and Chris Bootcheck (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) combined for two scoreless innings in relief of McCutchen. Bootcheck has not allowed a run in his last eight outings (7.2) and has struck out 12 and walked just two during that stretch, while Koplove has yet to allow a run in his four outings (5.0 IP) with the Tribe this season.
On the other side, Gwinnett relievers Rafael Cruz (1.0 IP) and Luis Valdez (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) also pitched well as they combined for two innings of scoreless relief with Cruz collecting his second hold of the season and Valdez notching his 12th save.
Indianapolis LF Luis Cruz (2-for-4, 1 R), RF Garrett Jones (2-for-4, 1 R) and 1B Steve Pearce (2-for-4, 2 RBI) carried the Tribe's offense as they combined for all six of the team's hits, as well as both of the runs and RBI. Pearce drove in the only two Tribe runs in the sixth inning, when his RBI double brought home both Cruz and Jones, who reached earlier in the frame on singles.
Indianapolis continues their four-game series with Gwinnett Braves on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Virgil Vasquez is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP John Halama is expected to get the nod for the Braves..
