Louisville Bats News Release

Louisville, KY - The Bats began game one of the four-game series tonight against the Norfolk Tides. Kevin Barker produced the only run for the Bats tonight with a home run to right and Wes Bankston had another multi-hit night he has now done so in seven out of eleven games. Still, it wasn't enough as the Tides defeated the Bats, 5-1.

The first inning was a struggle for the Bats. Leadoff hitter Joey Gathwright started the Tides off with a line drive single to center. Justin Christian then walked to put two on with nobody out. Then Jeff Fiorentino hit a sharp ground ball which bounced off of Ben Jukich into right field, scoring Gathwright. Fiorentino was credited with a double. Chad Moeller then flew out to right, scoring Christian on the sacrifice fly. Melvin Dorta then closed out the scoring in the first with a 379-foot two-run home run left, giving the Tides a 4-0 cushion.

Kevin Barker then blasted a solo home run to right field to start the second inning. Barker now has eight for the season.

The Tides produced another run in the fourth. Dorta started off the inning with a single. With one out, and Brandon Pinckney up, Jukich threw a wild pitch, advancing Dorta to second. Carlos Rojas then delivered a two-out single on a line to center to score Dorta, producing the final 5-1 margin.

Ben Jukich (4-3, 5.52) took the loss for the Bats. He went six innings, gave up seven hits and five runs, all earned, walked two and struck out six.

David Pauley (5-4, 3.75) got the win for the Tides. He went five innings, five hits, one run, one walk and struck out six.

One bright spot for the Bats was the continuing hot play of Wes Bankston. Fresh off of his IL Batter of the Week Award, he went 2-for-4. Since June 6th, he is batting .471 (16-for-34) with two home runs and 10 RBI.

The Bats will take on the Tides again tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at Louisville Slugger Field. RHP Ramon Ramirez (1-4, 4.75) gets the start for the Bats and LHP Troy Patton will make his Triple-A debut for the Tides.
