Seattle Storm News Release
SEATTLE, Monday, June 1, 2009 - The Seattle Storm and Pitney Bowes will unveil a newly renovated Reading & Learning Center for the First A.M.E. Child and Family Center in Seattle. The ceremony will be held at the Seattle Vocational Institute (SVI) Center on Thursday, June 4, starting at 11:30 a.m. Storm players Sue Bird, Janell Burse, Swin Cash, Tanisha Wright and Ashley Walker will be on hand to reveal the revitalized center.
The Storm won the center as a part of the 2008 Fast Break to Reading Program. Throughout the 2008 season, the WNBA and Pitney Bowes worked with six teams, including the Seattle Storm, to help raise awareness and funding for literacy. The Storm launched a literacy program at the beginning of the season that included fundraising efforts for local organizations and the chance to win the refurbished Reading & Learning Center. The team also hosted Reading Time-Out events to read to area youth and speak about the importance of reading.
First A.M.E. Child and Family Center (FAME) provides comprehensive child and family services at three strategically located centers in central and south-central Seattle. Children from birth to 5 years are enrolled in their Early Head Start, Head Start and Child Care programs. In addition to providing a healthful and safe learning environment for their children, FAME staff assists families in providing health and nutritional counseling, collaborates with parents in developing individual and family strengths, and partners with other community services to better meet the needs of FAME families. They are dedicated to the development of young children and the creation of strong, empowered families.
The Storm will tip off its 2009 10th Anniversary home campaign at KeyArena on Sunday, June 7 vs. the Sacramento Monarchs. Single-game tickets start as low as $14, and can be purchased by visiting stormbasketball.com, by calling 1-877-WNBA-TIX, or in person at any Ticketmaster retail location.
