Nashville Sounds News Release

DES MOINES - The Nashville Sounds lost to the Iowa Cubs by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park in Iowa, led by a great pitching performance by Cubs starter Jose Ascanio.

Ascanio (1-1) earned the win, striking out nine batters over five scoreless innings, while giving up only three hits in a 76-pitch effort.

The Cubs scored six of their seven runs in the second inning off Sounds starter Lindsay Gulin and never looked back.

Gulin allowed a single by the first three batters to load the bases, then his wild pitch scored outfielder Doug Deeds, making it 1-0. Matt Camp then knocked in two runners on a single to centerfield to extend the Cubs lead, 3-0. Jason Dubois capped off the inning by hitting a three-run home run that gave Iowa a 6-0 lead.

After being called up yesterday from Double-A Tennessee, Vince Perkins gave up a three-run shot to first baseman Joe Koshansky in the top of the fifth inning to trim the Cubs lead, 6-3. All of Koshansky's five home runs and 13 RBIs have come on the road this season.

Iowa tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth when Andres Blanco knocked in Deeds to make it 7-3.

Nashville pulled within three runs again in the ninth when Hernan Iribarren doubled home Jason Bourgeois in the ninth, making the score 7-4, but were unable to stage a comeback.

The Cubs' pitching staff on the afternoon held the Sounds' 3-4 batters in the lineup 0-for-8 with six strikeouts. Iribarren went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while catcher Patrick Arlis recorded his first hit of the season.

Gulin (1-2) picked up the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits over six innings for the Sounds. Matt Ginter followed, pitching two innings while allowing one run.

The Cubs and Sounds will play the finale of four-game series tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. in Iowa. Left-hander Chase Wright (1-3, 5.74) will make the start against southpaw J.R. Mathes (3-2, 4.76).
