Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA- The Indians scored first and last and jacked a grand slam in between, but they still could not overcome two big innings from the Red Sox, who prevailed 10-9 in a wacky opener to a seven-game homestand at Lewis-Gale Field. The teams combined for 15 runs in the first three innings alone, but somehow Salem starter Seth Garrison survived to complete five innings and pick up the win. Garrison improved to 2-1 despite allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits. Kinston's starter Ryan Morris never made it out of the third inning.
The Red Sox replied to the Indians lone first inning tally with a four-spot, highlighted by Ryan Kalish's three run homer. Though Morris appeared to find a rhythm with a 1-2-3 second, the Sox took advantage of some wildness in the third and erupted for five runs, knocking Morris out of the contest.
It was a vital offensive surge for Salem, who was behind despite its big first inning. Kinston used Lonnie Chisenhall's third grand slam of the season to retake the lead at 5-4, before adding another tally on Alex Castillo's RBI double in the third to go up 6-4. The Red Sox immediately answered with the five-run third to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Sox used a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch strikeout, along with three hits in the last of the third.
Kinston crept back into the game and had the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the ninth, but Derrick Loop earned his third save of the season-and second in as many days-by striking out Roman Pena to finish the job. Kalish, Luis Exposito, and Jered Stanley each recorded multiple hits for the Sox, while Kalish totaled a season-high four RBI.
After Garrison departed, Robert Coello tossed three strong innings for the Sox, allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts. Josh Papelbon surrendered two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in the ninth before Loop came on to close it out.
With the win, the Red Sox have now won three in a row overall and four of the last five. In addition, the Sox win their second straight against Kinston, evening the season series at two wins apiece, and move a game ahead of the K-Tribe in the Southern Division of the Carolina League.
The series resumes Tuesday night at 7:05, with Kinston's lefty Ryan Miller opposing Salem's righty Dave McKae.
