April 14, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals scored three runs in their final at-bat on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off the Midland RockHounds by a score of 8-7 at Hammons Field.

Brett Wallace's RBI groundout tied the game at 6-6 and Mark Hamilton's RBI double put the Cards ahead to stay, as Springfield avoided a sweep by snapping a two-game skid.

Leading 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Midland's Rocky Roquet (0-1) got roughed up for three runs. A one-out walk to Jim Rapoport got things started for Springfield, as he advanced to second on a single to center by Donovan Solano. Wallace's slow chopper to the right side of the infield plated Rapoport as the Cards tied the game at 6-6. Hamilton followed with his second double of the day, driving home Solano with the go-ahead run to make it 7-6. After a walk to Daniel Descalso, Steven Hill followed with a much-needed double of his own, scoring Hamilton. On the play, Descalso was thrown out at the plate, but Springfield had a two-run lead at 8-6.

That run was an important one, as Francisco Samuel gave up a two-out RBI single to Tommy Everidge, as Midland closed the gap to 8-7. Samuel followed with his his third strikeout of the inning though, as Adrian Cardenas went down swinging, giving Samuel his first save in Double-A and a .500 home stand for Springfield at 3-3.

Hamilton, returning to the team on Tuesday after opening up the year at Extended Spring Training with a right foot infection, started the scoring in the first inning with a two-run double, giving the Redbirds a 2-0 lead against Midland starter Graham Godfrey.

Midland tallied five times in the top of the second inning, chasing Springfield starter Kyle Mura after just 1 2/3 innings.

Trey Hearne came out of the mired Springfield bullpen and threw very well, allowing just one run over 4 1/3 innings in relief.

Trailing 6-2, the Cards began to chip away in the third, as Rapoport scored on a Wallace single to make it 6-3. Rapoport brought home Tyler Henley in the fourth with an RBI single and then again in the sixth, after being hit with the bases loaded, making it 6-5.

Elvis Hernandez (2-0) worked two perfect innings for Springfield to earn his second win of the year.

The Cards (3-3) take a day off on Wednesday and then hit the road on Thursday, heading to Frisco and Midland as part of a six-game road trip. Justin Fiske (0-1) will take on Kasey Kiker (1-0) in the first game of the Frisco series on Thursday night at 7pm. The Redbirds return home on Thursday, April 23rd, as they open a four-game home stand against Tulsa. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com.
