Vancouver Giants News Release
VANCOUVER BC - The Vancouver Giants will have a playoff rematch against the Spokane Chiefs in the next round of the WHL playoffs, the Western Conference semi finals, which will begin Friday April 3rd at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. This will be the first time that the last two MEMORIAL CUP CHAMPIONS have met in a playoff series since 1992-93, when Kamloops met Spokane and beat them 3 games to none in the Western Conference Semi Final.
Last season, the Chiefs knocked out the Giants in six games in the WHL West Semi Finals en route to their 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship. The Giants and Chiefs have played twice this season, with the Giants winning both games. Back on February 6th, Tyson Sexsmith made 29 saves and the Giants skated to their most impressive road win of the season, 4-0 in Spokane. Among Sexsmith's saves were a point blank save off the stick of Chiefs sniper Drayson Bowman and a penalty shot save against Tyler Johnson. Garry Nunn, Brendan Gallagher, Craig Cunningham and Mikhail Fisenko scored the goals while the Jonathon Blum led all players with a +3 rating.
Just over two weeks later on February 24th, these two teams met at the Pacific Coliseum. Giants forward Adam Basford would score once and add an assist as the Giants would roll to a 5-2 win. Andrej Kudrna, Evander Kane, Craig Cunningham and Craig Schira would also score for Vancouver while Tyson Sexsmith would turn aside 22 of 24 shots for the victory. Steve Kuhn and Blake Gal scored for the Chiefs. Vancouver would go 1 for 6 on the power play while the Chiefs would once again be held off the scoresheet with the man advantage, going 0/3.
The Giants will host the first two games of this best of seven series, beginning April 3rd, 7:30 pm at the Pacific Coliseum. Game Two will take place the following night, April 4th at 7 pm. Tickets for both of these games is available through TICKETMASTER.
